Rules Questions

Many of you recently on this site in the Rule's section no that there has been this longlasting debate over whether or not the are just hits and misses in pathfinder. Many have called this a binary system.

Some said yes and other said no. Particularly, those the said no were arguing that there are hits, misses and then a third category that is a hit that does not do damage. Those arguing such pointed to the language in Crane Wing and Deflect Arrows. There ended up being close to 30 FAQ on the topic.

As it turns out, it is a binary system of hits and misses and a "miss" is defined in the rules.

The armor and Armor Class system is an abstraction where an attack roll that "misses" represents actual misses as well as attacks that fail to hit the target hard or accurately enough to cause harm. Some players and GMs may prefer a different system where a failed attack roll is an actual miss, and armor absorbs points of damage from successful attacks.

So it turns out the attacks that do no harm because the fail to hit the target accurately enough are also considered misses. Deflections from Crane Style and Deflect Arrow would fall into this category.

Further, Paizo states that "misses" used in Pathfinder are not "misses" in the most strict interpretation of the word miss.

Finally, Paizo states that a variant system has been developed for those who believe it more satisfying to have misses be actual misses.

I hope this calms everyone down. A system of hit, miss and then another category could have got real messy.

And the 'deflected' attack has been further explained in FAQ.

This thread is not needed.

In the threads where it was discussed, it was answered, and the FAQ was linked.

This thread has no Rules Question.

I feel this thread may need to be changed / deleted to reflect the actual Design Team statement that provides that deflections are handled differently and the claim made in posts one and two do not reflect this clarification from the team.

It should be deleted, the poster posted the same thing in 2 other threads as well as creating this thread for whatever reason.
