So I'm looking into getting a summoning shackle for my summoning cleric in pfs but I'm worried that it is one of those options that looks good initially but is actually a trap purchase when compared to other options. So is this item a strong purchase for a 4th about to be 5th level summoning cleric or is something like a lesser extend metamagic wand more viable?

If you're planning to be on the front line, then I guess it could be good. With my one summoning character, I've found one of the biggest advantages is being able to send summoned critters after enemies that are initially out of range of the rest of the party. This is why I frequently summon things that can fly. So staying within 30 feet of the summoned critter could be an issue.

Well as it currently stands most of the combat has been pretty close with me summoning and wading into the fray with support spells and buffing before I begin my own melee assault proper. Currently my main summons though have been ground based with Akatas being the primary choice and casting spiritual weapon to catch characters too far away for me to either melee or reach quickly.

What a strange question, are you just trying to point out the item and want everyone to agree with you how crazy badly designed it is?
It's just as expensive per extended spell, but it's MUCH more limited ... also at higher level extending low level summons becomes pretty useless, but the ability to extend any low level spell remains useful. So get the rod.

Yeah that's the feeling I'm starting to get as well. Like I didn't mind the focus on summonings, limited range, and higher expense at first since I originally thought it was an unlimited use item but after I noticed the limit (albeit greater limit then the rod) I started to question whether it really retained it's value.
