New race, how many levels to eat?

Homebrew and House Rules

Hi, I have built a large construct race that cost exactly 30 points. How many levels should that be equivalent to? Also, if I took it to 40 points how many levels should that equate to? The party is currently level 3 but will be level 4 soon.

Thanks.

None. Giving a powerful race an "adjusted character level" doesn't work as a balancing tool. If this race is an enemy, just try to figure out it's Challenge Rating. If it's meant as a PC, then give the other PCs boons of a similar value - special feats, or expensive items.

That seems an inelegant solution and too abstract to figure out easily. Wouldn't it be far easier just to say this many points equals this level?

usually it's a +1 level adjustment for every +10 points, there are also rules for decreasing level adjustment after so many levels (up to half starting adjustment). You would level up halfway between 2 levels to accommodate for this. I think it's every 4 character levels. This race would be a -2 reducing to a -1 halfway between levels 3 and 4. That is just what i remember off the top of my head so whether it's 3 or 4 levels, I can't quite remember.
