when cohorts level up, do they get their own "NPC" money from the chart that determines NPC wealth by level, or does the party need to devote their own money to equipping the cohorts? if they get the NPC money for free when they level I figure it was just wealth they are accruing through their own ventures or through selling the stuff the party doesnt want (since it's not much money).
just curious what the consensus is.
I give them gear equal to the npc wealth chart as they level up.

Maybe this thread will be of interest for you.
While the main argument is "a cohort is entitled to a share of the party loot?" almost all participants agree that, after it has been generated with his starting gear, a cohort don't get any wealth automatically.
He can devote some of if time to money producing activities and buy equipment with his profits, but that is something that should be managed between the GM and the player with the cohort.
Probably Ultimate Campaign will have some useful rule about cohorts.
@Black Raven: I think that the cohort should be generated with gear appropriate for a NPC with his level, so half of a same level PC WBL.
Yeah they don't automatically gain wealth out of thin air. After joining up with your character he only gains what you give him. Or at least that's my take on it.

I would say they get some basic gear (npc appro) but everything else has to be shared with the player. 25% WBL goes to not only PC's basic (magical) weapons but also the NPC's basic (magical) weapons.
It's nice, but expensive :)
From a balance aspect I would say it's best that they be generated with NPC wealth by level and then you have to split your portion of the loot with your cohort. This balances out the second character you have by forcing you to make decisions about how you gear up both characters.
