Silver Crusade

Two questions for a PFS character of mine. I know the first could go in the advice forum, but I want advice as to how it will play out in Society specifically. And the second could go in the rules forum, but then I'd get a bunch of house rule opinions, when I need a RAW answer for PFS. So since they're both about the same PC, I'm just gonna combine them and throw them in the Society forum.

1. What level should I get a magic weapon? I just realized my roguish front line PC is 1 xp away from 5th level, and still using a masterwork scimitar as his primary weapon (dervish dance). I just picked up enough money for a +2 dex belt, which does everything a magic weapon would do and then some, but should I be worrying about DR vs magic, or do you think I can wait one more adventure (level 5!) and hope for the best?

2. I'm pretty sure you can't use two ioun stones of the same type, because they won't stack unless they specifically say so. But what about one cracked and one regular of the same type? As a rogue, Qassir wants to catch people flat footed for sneak attacks, so 500 gp for the cracked dusty rose ioun stone that gives +1 initiative sounds like a good deal. And he's going Halfling Opportunist prestige class at level 6, which relies heavily on combat maneuvers, so I'll eventually want to spend the 5000 gp for a regular dusty rose ioun stone to put in a Wayfinder, which will give me +1 AC, +2 CMB, and +2 CMD. Can I have both a regular and cracked dusty rose stones active at the same time?

1. I would get the weapon first. Its cheap, and DR/magic popping up at any time before you get the +1 will really suck. You'll get the money for both of them soon enough, so don't fret or anything.

2. Pretty sure you can use both. Just remember competence bonuses don't stack with each other.

1) If the only reason you'd get a magic weapon is for DR/magic or incorporeals, don't bother yet. Just carry a 50gp oil of magic weapon to use if you need it. That should tide you over just fine until you're ready for a +2 weapon.

2) I'm not aware of any rule prohibiting the use of multiple ioun stones of the same type. Obviously bonuses to the same stat with the same type won't stack unless otherwise specified, but I don't think anything prevents you from having the stones.

1. I try to shoot for a +3 enchantment bonus on my main weapon by lvl 11-12. Thus I would be grabbing a +1 bonus every 4 lvls or so. I would probably buy that first +1 earlier just so that I could bypass DR/magic.

2. I don't see a problem with having two different versions of the same stone type as long as they gave different bonuses.

This isn't a "planning in advance" thread, when it comes to the weapon, only when it comes to the stones. The character's already level 4, only 1 xp from level 5, and has been fine with only a masterwork scimitar so far. But I keep seeing references around here to people thinking you need a magic weapon by level 3 or 4. DR/magic was the only thing I was concerned with until Jiggy mentioned incorporeals, which I hadn't thought of.

It's just that he's a totally dex based PC in every possible way. With dervish dance, I use it for hit rolls and damage rolls. It's crucial for AC because he's in light armor, and a mithral chain shirt allows a +6 dex bonus, which is what I'll have once I get the belt. Initiative's extra important for this guy because I want to catch things flat footed for sneak attacks. I use reflex saves with evasion. Plus he's a dex based skill monkey, focused on acrobatics to get into flanking position for sneak attacks, along with stealth, sleight of hand, disable device, etc. So I really want that dex belt. I figure it'll cost the same as the +1 scimitar and +1 ring of protection combined, and do twice as much for me as both of them combined. So now that I've successfully saved up the money for it, I'm buying it.

Anyway, thanks for the oil of magic weapon suggestion. I decided to just get one of those with the belt, just in case it becomes absolutely necessary. It should hold me for the one adventure until I get another 2k gp to spend on adding magic to the scimitar.

Actually, my new issue is that there are a ton of 2000-2500 gp items I want to get, and I have to decide what order to pick them up. Between the +1 magic weapon upgrade, ring of protection, amulet of natural armor, handy haversack, boots of elvenkind, etc, I'll have to prioritize as I get more money.

Oil of bless weapon is also a nice consumable to have on hand. It allows you to treat your weapon as +1 magic vs evil creatures for bypassing DR/magic and to hit evil incorporeal creatures. It also treats your weapon as good aligned for bypassing DR/Good, which is tough to do otherwise, and auto-confirms critical hits vs evil creatures.

Another vote for the oils. I carry an Oil of Magic Weapon and an Oil of Bless Weapon on almost all of my characters. Once they become obsolete, I give them to other party members without magic weapons should the need arise.

My cleric skated without a magical weapon until level 8. My magus got one as soon as possible so I could stack on bonuses from his arcane pool ability.

I'd say incorporeal is actually more common in PFS than DR/magic. I've seen lots of DR in PFS, but rarely DR/magic. Slashing, bludgeoning, silver, and good all seem more common. My ranger has ghost salts for his arrows to deal with incorporeal, and I'll get a magic bow when convenient.

Oil of bless weapon is absolutely amazing and many times is much better than having a magical weapon. The magic weapon is a bitter purchase for me, because you don't even get a to hit increase out of a 2K expenditure. And +2 costs 6000K more.

That being said, I think that two weapon fighting builds really, really benefit from magical weapons because those bonuses get spammed over and over. I suppose by that logic, it's also very good for my ranger. But he's level 3, and so is still very poor.

But for a two hander build, I just can't see dropping big bucks on weapon enhancement. I have found adamantium weapons to be a better investment.
