Question about Knowledge: Arcana checks for specialized Wizards

Rules Questions

Forgive me if this is very basic and expressed in the rulebook. I tried to find a clear rule but couldn't.

If a Wizard tries to make a Knowledge: Arcana check on magic or an artifact with properties from one of his opposition schools, is there any sort of penalty?

Example: Wizard with School of Conjuring specialty and Opposition Schools of Necromancy and Enchantment attempts a Knowledge: Arcana check on a Robe of Bones(Necromancer gear).

I know you take penalties to spellcraft when you use it to determine the qualities of an object. Knowledge doesn't have that penalty and bonus I don't think.

I think the answer here is "there isn't any such rule". So, basically, that you can't find a clear rule means there's no rule. This has to be the case, or else the book would be 10x as thick, because everything in it would have to say "there is no modifier to this for specialist wizards".

Wait, so to examine magical gear, the check is Spellcraft and not Knowledge: Arcana?

Yes. Though, I have played in homebrew games that nixed spellcraft and just had casters roll their respective knowledge skills.

Identifying magical gear is indeed a Spellcraft check.
Identifying potions can also be done with a Perception check.
