I had an idea for a game that I have always wanted to run but am not sure if it isn't a truly terrible idea.
The party are peacekeeper trying to prevent the fighting magical factions from accidentally destroying the city whilst they duel to prove that their clan is the rightful successor to the Dawn Sword (the original weapon said to have cleaved the sky from the earth).
I really like the idea of pc's in over their head in battle much bigger than them trying to make the best of it but am not sure if it would be fun to play. Does anyone have any experience of such a game that they could relay?

The idea was that the Pc's would be part of the watch/ special constabulary under the purview of the office of the high magistrate. They would have to put out fires(reckless wizard duels in the heart of a city)put down wild undead, elemental, summons etc and somehow figure out how to end the mage war before there is nothing left of the city but a pile of rubble.
What I like about the idea is that pc's are not fighting for the magical treasure but are on damage control its the complete opposite of the traditional traditional gun ho adventuring style. The pc's aren't in it for gold or honour or the magic bauble at the end of the rainbow they just want to keep their city safe/ do their jobs/ survive long enough to claim their pension.
