Just got word that Legendary stop-motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen has passed away at the age of 93.
We all owe a huge debt to him- he gave us the canvas upon which we painted our childhoods.

Jason and the Argonauts

Terrible news. Always loved the skeleton fight in Jason & the Argonauts. Ray was so ahead of his time. He'll be missed.

One of the true giants of fantasy. Give him a stop-motion salute in celebration of a life amazingly lived.

Announcement

His stop-motion pioneering lead to many great movies and inspired future movie makers and special effects artists.

Scarab Sages

Very sad news. R.I.P.

The Exchange

Yep, the skeleton fight in Jason and the Argonauts is up there with the classic moments of cinematic fantasy. Sad to hear he's gone, but he lived to a ripe old age and his films certainly gave me a lot of pleasure and influenced a lot of my personal interest in fantasy and the sort of imagery I took from it.

=(

Dark Archive

Wow, my brother-in-law and I just started working on a stop motion animated feature,... he's going to be more bummed out than I am.

Those early movies are what attracted me to monsters as a kid and worked as the gateway to rpgs for me.

RIP

The Exchange

He was one of the reasons fantasy appealed to me, setting me on a path to D&D when it came out. I have a box set of his films and will be watching them in memory over the next week or so....
Thanks Harry.

Thanks Ray for the joy you brought to movies. Rest in Peace.

He was the hero of my childhood.

We lost another great one. R.I.P. Ray Harryhausen. I remember seeing his movies as a kid. He will be missed.

Silver Crusade

God, I was nearly floored when I heard the news. All those childhood memories just came rushing back.

I had always assumed he had passed away decades ago because I always thought of him as one of the "Classic Greats". Man his movies left a large footprint across so many of our childhoods. The Sinbad movies were my gateway to his work.

Here's hoping you're creating even wilder fantasies for others, Mr. Harryhausen. :)

He got to live to a blessed age. His work will be remembered.

Amazing artist and great guy. I've got a couple of Harryhausen collections in my DVD collection. My introduction was Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. I LOVED that movie and the REAL Clash of the Titans. That Medusa blew my mind and really freaked me out. He brought a whole lot of magic to the movies. : )

Scarab Sages

Thank you for your work. Rest in Peace, Mr Harryhausen.

Will be missed. Many new FX creators should take a page from history and study how he did it.

:(

RIP, Ray!

His films - especially the wonderful stop-motion monsters! - were a large part of what got me hooked on fantasy RPG's, and fantasy RPG makers clearly took a lot of inspiration from Harryhausen films.

Liberty's Edge

Release the Kraken...and the skeletons and Mighty Joe Young and Gwangi and The Ymir, etc.

I just want to take this moment to thank Ray. It was his great work that helped me and my brothers and sisters find a place in the memories of generations of people. His influence can still be seen in miniatures and pictures in gaming products to this day.

Thank you, Ray! For all the special effects guys you inspired and all the imaginations you stirred with your wonderful creations. Rest in peace.

As a kid, every Saturday morning there was a "creature feature" movie on. I have to say I think 75% of them had a Ray Harryhausen monster or effect that just riveted me. This video probably recaps it best. Sorry if someone's already mentioned it.
