Use Magic Device

Rules Questions

When using UMD to read a scroll, does failure to activate the spell, expend the spell. I'd like to think it would be like failing to use a wand; "Failing the roll does not expend a charge." Of course unless you roll a natural 1, where a mishap would occur. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I believe that the bolded text of the UMD skill description (denoting action type and "try again" parameters) indicates that you can, since the Use a scroll section does not override it with a specific penalty for failing the roll.

It is not 100% clear but here is how I see the rules regarding this.

The only place that I can see anyhting about magical energy being released is under the Activate Blindly DC 25 check. So, if you try and use a brand new wand that you have not identified or a scroll that you have not used Read Magic or Spellcraft, then you need to Activate Blindly and run the risk of expending a charge or losing the scroll if you fail by 10 or more.

If you fail on the Use a Scroll, then there is nothing about energy being released or the scroll being wasted. In that case you just wasted an action and can try again next round unless you rolled a natural 1.

Hey, Thanks. Now to deliberate with the GM. Who will probably refer to Page 1. The GM is always right.

If you fail a caster level check to use a scroll, it's not expended.

Since Use Magic Device allows you to use a scroll as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list, I think that would be resolved before any caster level check happens, so I don't see how failing the UMD could use up the scroll when failing later on in the process doesn't.
