CAGM REACH and other questions

Rules Questions

Hi all!! Last night we were playing a new campaign with new 15th lvl characters and some rules questions came up. I am looking for direct links to the srd or in the book for clarification on some issues. The first was the come and get me power

Prerequisite: Barbarian 12

Benefit: While raging, as a free action the barbarian may leave herself open to attack while preparing devastating counterattacks. Enemies gain a +4 bonus on attack and damage rolls against the barbarian until the beginning of her next turn, but every attack against the barbarian provokes an attack of opportunity from her, which is resolved prior to resolving each enemy attack.

The Dm had asked since the monster was doing a full attack which was one action why would I get 3 counterattacks against him. I didnt think this needed clarification because it says "but every attack against the barbarian provokes an attack of opportunity". Am I wrong here?

The next question that came up is if I have CAGM active and I being a medium size creature charge or run up to a large creature with threatening reach of 10ft would I get an AOO with CAGM since hes hitting me from reach. I admit I am not very good at the rules with provoking but I think if I leave the square 10 ft out to get to his adjacent square thats when I provoke. He also didnt seem to want me to use lunge for my AOO so im a little stuck.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

You are right, and your GM is wrong. You provided the text from CAGM, which says you get to counterattack for each attack levelled against you, not each attack "action". Keep in mind that the number of AOO you get is still limited (I assume you have Combat Reflexes).

You can use Lunge at the start of your turn (as a free action) and if an enemy attacks you from reach, you counterattack with CAGM. The enemy could choose not to take this attack if they are intelligent enough to make that tactical decision.

Of course, without Lunge, you would not be able to counterattack in the situation you describe.

Not sure if you are asking about this but, as for making an AOO with Lunge outside of your turn...

Lunge (Combat)

You can strike foes that would normally be out of reach.

Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +6.

Benefit: You can increase the reach of your melee attacks by 5 feet until the end of your turn by taking a –2 penalty to your AC until your next turn. You must decide to use this ability before any attacks are made.

*emphasis mine

Lunge won't work for AOO on the enemy's turn because Lunge ends at the end of your turn. Also, if an enemy that attacks you from reach, when you do not have reach, you can't attack them, even for CAGM.

CAGM vs reach does suck because it wont work, of course you can always turn it off. Or you can get a ring of enlarge person and to boost your size and reach. Now, if you're fighting huge creatures then you have to switch to a reach weapon yourself. Enlarged with a reach weapon (I recommend the fauchard for critical threat range) you will have a reach of 20ft, but have a dead zone within 10ft.

Ultimately, if you're next to an enemy with reach and you're large they have to take a move action, not just a 5ft step, and can only make 1 attack. You then proceed to chagre pounce and slaughter them with a full attack. Against targets larger than you it is tactically unwise to use CAGM unless they stand next to you and slug it out. Which would be a tactically unwise maneuver for them.

Awesome thanks for clarification. I will talk to my DM about it. I think its time to get a reach weapon : )
