Rapid Shot penalty and AoOs

Rules Questions

OK, we were playing and someone wasn't adding the Rapid Shot penalty to all of their attacks. When mentioned, someone else said that you also take that penalty to all Attacks of Opportunity for that round. I had never heard this before but it came from someone who has played for a long time so I went with it. It really didn't matter because the archer didn't have Snap Shot and thus didn't threaten to use AoOs.

So, my question is whether or not this is true. The initial argument was that Rapid Shot requires a Full Round Action thus the penalties apply for a complete round (until your next turn). I don't think that because it is called a "full round" action that it applies to anything past your turn.

Thoughts?

A full-round action does not extend outside of your turn. For example, look at the difference between a spell with a casting time of "1 full-round action" and a spell with a casting time of "1 round". The former will produce its effect during your turn, while the latter requires you to perform a full-round action and ALSO wait until just before your next turn before you finally finish casting.

With that in mind, let's see the text of Rapid Shot:

Rapid Shot wrote:
When making a full-attack action with a ranged weapon, you can fire one additional time this round. All of your attack rolls take a –2 penalty when using Rapid Shot.

Now, when does it say we take the –2 penalty? "When using Rapid Shot", that's when.

When are we "using Rapid Shot"? "When making a full-attack action", that's when.

So you only take the penalty during that full-attack action. This also mirrors the precedent set by Two-Weapon Fighting: you don't take those penalties on AoO's, either.

Thanks Jiggy. I figured as much. I just wanted to get some other opinions to make sure I was interpreting things correctly.

I think people get used to things like Power Attack who's penalties and benefits last "until your next turn" (therefore including any AoOs you might make before then) and don't realize that Rapid Shot doesn't say "until your next turn", it says "when using rapid shot" as pointed out above.
