hi,
due to change of players i am changing my current pc, was thinking on what shall be a good choice in our group.
we used to be 5 memebers, 1 is leaving us. playing a 4 man group is some what different.
we have: melle ranger - big - strong so-so defences (with no animal companion) + cleric that have STR of 10 (pure caster mostly healing) + a blaster sorcerer.
so logic says - it is best to have a pc that can stand a melle.
options i was thinking of:
1. cleric with good CON and STR, sacred summon and heavy armor training. can take fronts AND bring help.
2. a fighter: mostly 2 handed sword killer that plan on taking some archery OR rogue dip for some non melle useage.
what are your opinions?

Well, a Summoner is another good option because you could build your eidolon for up close and personal, and either focus mainly on buffing him and the ranger, or be something like a half-orc and join the fray yourself. Master Summoner was fun for the summoned support, and Synthesists are great tanks, although lose actions compared to the vanilla summoner with the synth. Although you'd be limited to light armor, you would have access to the shield spell to mitigate that.
The two-handed fighter can pump out some really sick damage at pretty much any level and isn't super feat intensive, so it could definitely work with a little dip into the archery line.
Did you consider possibly the Arcane Duelist bard? It's actually rather impressive at AC and damage output with sword and board (although not so much as the fighter), plus the bonuses from bardic performance to your ranger buddy is always appreciated. Not to mention the very nice buff spells on the bard's spell list. Also, with the skill points you would still have out of combat usefulness. You would have to deal with light armor at low levels, but that's why I suggested the s&b fighting style.
Also, what level are you?

we are at level 7 now.
summoner sounds good, his arch-types are banned -can you make him work (20 point buy out) as a support melle? wont he be too fregile, with MAD and light armor ? (even with shield)is he any better than a cleric with sacred summon feat ? (all animal are auto with the summon align. making them standard action).
a fighter is indeed a beast - only fear is - at high levels - non spelss caster tend to fade a bit.
a bard can be good at melle? how? we are a poor magic world - so no crazy buffs with items. he has AC that is akmost irrelevent -3/4 BAB and not so good damage - how is he any better than a melle cleric ?

Well, first the arcane duelist gets arcane strike for free, going sword and board you can go high str low dex, if you spend your first turn buffing, you can give the whole party pretty big boosts for the rest of the combat (inspire courage performance and the spell Good Hope will give everyone +4 to attack and damage, as well as +2 to all saves and skills). Pick up some elven chain if you can get your hands on it (base isn't magic, just a bit rare). Also, the arcane duelist gets arcane bond with a weapon, so you can enchant it yourself. Also, you have access to cure spells so you can heal the cleric if he gets knocked out. Keep in mind that at this level, the bonus from power attack is the same as the fighter's.
The summoner can be a bit MAD, but it's doable. Keep in mind you really don't need a very high charisma, just enough to cast your spells. The main benefit is already having your eidolon at the start of combat so you can spend that standard action doing something else like cast haste on the entire party. I'm at work on my tablet right now so I'm not going to go into a detailed build, but mostly I'd say go half orc for the weapon proficiencies, grab arcane strike for the bonus damage (as with the bard) and get your hits where you can. Getting the dimensional agility line of feats is also a lot of fun later, since you have access to dimension door at level 7 and a 3/4 BAB. Most of your damage will come from your eidolon (because that's what it's for), but also consider (and this goes for the bard and summoner) that any hits that other party mekbers make because of your buffs (either through additional attacks or bonuses to hit and damage) are effectively damage caused by you, albeit indirectly
EDIT: actually, the summoner should also be aiming for elven chain mail.
