Composite Longbows: How do they work?

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

PC finds a composite longbow +3 strength.

1. Does that mean that I have to have +3 Str bonus or Str 16-17?
2. Can I have Str 18 and still use it?
3. What if I only have Str 14? Do I just get a +2 or am I too weak to use it?

This is covered in the Equipment section of the Core Rule Book, and should be in the Rules section:

Longbow, Composite: You need at least two hands to use a bow, regardless of its size. You can use a composite longbow while mounted. All composite bows are made with a particular strength rating (that is, each requires a minimum Strength modifier to use with proficiency). If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating of the composite bow, you can't effectively use it, so you take a –2 penalty on attacks with it. The default composite longbow requires a Strength modifier of +0 or higher to use with proficiency. A composite longbow can be made with a high strength rating to take advantage of an above-average Strength score; this feature allows you to add your Strength bonus to damage, up to the maximum bonus indicated for the bow. Each point of Strength bonus granted by the bow adds 100 gp to its cost. If you have a penalty for low Strength, apply it to damage rolls when you use a composite longbow.

This is more a question for the rules forum, but here is your answer:

If you have a longbow +3 STR rating:

If you have a +3 strength modifier OR GREATER, then you can add +3 to your damage rolls with the bow. If you have more STR than the bow requires, it is wasted.

If you have less strength than the required for the bow, then you take -2 penalty on attack rolls with that bow AND you only add up to your strength modifier to the damage.

So shooting with a composite longbow (+3 str rating) with a +2 strength modifier means you shoot at -2 attack and +2 damage.

Also, as an addendum, you are not allowed to upgrade the STR rating of a composite bow in PFS by paying the difference. However, Ultimate Equipment added a new magical weapon property for composite bows called adaptive that will make the bow magically adjust to your current strength rating at all times. And it's cheap (+1,000gp).

That's what I was looking for, so adaptive is good to have if you are going to upgrade your STR over time.

Second question to this, if I wanted an Adaptive +1 Composite Longbow, how much would it cost? Is it then considered a +2 weapon?

It would cost you:

base cost of the masterwork comp longbow (whatever you choose, based on STR rating)
PLUS the cost to make it +1 first: +2,000 gp
PLUS the cost to make it adaptive: +1,000 gp

Final cost (and fame required to purchase) would be: 3,000+base cost

It would count as a +1 weapon for further enchantments, as adaptive is not a "+1 bonus" equivalent, just an additional flat cost.

adaptive bow character:
I have a wayang "fighter" archer that tries to abuse the adaptive bow enchantment. He is a 1 Barbarian/2 Alchemist (ragechemist)/4 fighter now. So he gets +4 rage bonus STR from rage, +6 alchemical bonus STR from mutagen for now, which is another +5 damage thanks to adaptive. He will soon become a Living Monolith prestige class in order to get a +4 size bonus on top. His belt is all DEX, so I can also take potions of bull's strength for another +2 damage

Crobledo, thank you very much, I appreciate this information.

There is a perfectly good flag button up there to mark them.

Utilized, I assure you. But at this point I thought it might bear pointing out to the poster, rather than just the mods.
