What about an aberration as a familiar?

It dawned on me today that there's no aberration in the Improved Familiar list. Do you think that a choker, or maybe a volt or t'shann (from the Tome of Horrors) would do?

Also there isn't any ooze, monstrous humanoid, or plant type familiars.

Remember, it has to be tiny and of low CR. Chockers are probably out of the question, but if theres some adorable little fuzzball. I could totally see an ooze familiar.

Sovereign Court

Chokers are within the CR-bound for improved familiars (which are CR 1-3), but their 10ft reach may be a bit excessive. And they're actually decent combatants for their CR, which is also unlike other familiars.

Flumphs should probably be okay, as should reefclaws and Goblin Snakes. Fleshdregs aren't overpowered, but might be hard to fit flavorwise. Bogwiggle shouldn't cause any issues.

I'd be far more careful with the more powerful aberations. And as Ascalaphus said, be careful of those with reach. It's a very powerful ability for familiars to have.

Familiari can be Small too. I didn't think about flumphs, good idea there.

there's nothing wrong with a small creature with 10ft. reach, just ask your GM before using a choker as a familiar. Rhu-Chalik and Wizard's Shackles can also be good for familiars, if you have a reasonable GM

Liberty's Edge

Goblin Snakes are definitely a good pull. I think an akaname would make a cool familiar too. A few of the improved familiars already have basically humanoid shape so the akaname isn't getting any advantage over them.

Petriferns are available familiar options, I believe. With Improved Familiar, I can reasonably see someone getting a vegepygmy, xtabay, leaf ray, or mindslaver mold.

As for aberrations, I could also see a chon chon, grindylow, sagaris, dossenus, executioner's hood, incutilis, or fungal crawler serving as an improved familiar.

A monstrous humanoid improved familiar would be sort of strange, but maybe a formian worker, ningyo, kappa, or khaei could work.

Oozes, on the other hand, would be absolutely fantastic familiars. A giant amoeba, a boilborn, a garden ooze, a hag ooze, any would be a lot of fun to have along.

I find that the Alchemist's Tumor Familiars can fill the motif of an aberration. It can be anything from an animated spare body part to a writhing, groaning, tentacle covered mockery of nature. Familiar archetypes help to further delve into the uncanny.

My current freak show has a "scorpion" bodyguard that looks like a crawling hand with 3 fingers on each side, thumb-mandables, and a finger-tail with a sharp poisoned fingernail. Alternate ideas included a scholarly "slug" familiar that looked like slimy, animate brain tissue, or a ravenous fleshbeast "fox" that would explode out of her body, expand to the size of a large dog, and then start wrecking people with mutagen claws and teeth.
