per level average hit point gains

Silver Crusade

Anyone know where I can find the average hp gains when you level? I'm trying to find this out because someone said a cleric gets 5 plus their con bonus and I wants to make sure on that information.

You get half the avarage rounded up. So... D6 is 4, D8 is 5, D10 is 6, D12 is 7. Your correct about him getting 5+con.

Err... you get average, rounded up. Not half the average. :P

Strictly speaking if you're using average hitpoints you gain the average result of a die. Generally, this can be calculated by adding the minimum result of the die to the maximum result of the die and then dividing that number by two.

D6 results in 3.5, d8 results in 4.5, and so on.

Using raw averages you effectively gain "half" a hitpoint for each level, though this half a hitpoint doesn't actually do anything until you gain another "half" on your next level. Just using the average rounded up is a very common way to handle this- as MrSin posted- and makes the whole thing a bit more simple, though it will result in a slight increase in hitpoints across the board.

They probably refer to Pathfinder Society Characters player characters where HP gain by class level is defined in the Pathfinder Socity Guide.

Most Paizo most printed PC however use the true average of the die rounded down. ie your cleric would gain 4+con at level 2, and 5+con at level 3.

In Pathfinder Society your cleric would gain 5hp + Constitution modifier + 1 for favored class bonus (if any) + 1 for Toughness (if you have it).

Is this some sort of specific exception to the "always round down" rule in the game, or is this more of a house rule to "round up" when taking the average?

In my games you round down on odd levels and up on even levels. This ends up giving a slight advantage over the pure average since level 1 starts with max hit points. I also allow players to roll if they like, but they have to decide whether to roll or take the average before they roll, not after.

My last post specifically refers to Pathfinder Society.

In my home games, since Hit Points scale linearly and damage scales exponentially, I always give players and monsters a higher HP range.

So, Barbarian PC rolls a d12. Half of 12 is 7 (6.5 rounded up). If the result is anything 1-6, I have him/her reroll until they get something 7-12.

Everyone loves more HP.
