Cold Weather Rules and wearing Animal Pelts

Rules Questions

Here are the cold weather rules;

Cold and exposure deal nonlethal damage to the victim. A character cannot recover from the damage dealt by a cold environment until she gets out of the cold and warms up again. Once a character has taken an amount of nonlethal damage equal to her total hit points, any further damage from a cold environment is lethal damage.

An unprotected character in cold weather (below 40° F) must make a Fortitude save each hour (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A character who has the Survival skill may receive a bonus on this saving throw and might be able to apply this bonus to other characters as well (see the skill description).

In conditions of severe cold or exposure (below 0° F), an unprotected character must make a Fortitude save once every 10 minutes (DC 15, +1 per previous check), taking 1d6 points of nonlethal damage on each failed save. A character who has the Survival skill may receive a bonus on this saving throw and might be able to apply this bonus to other characters as well. Characters wearing a cold weather outfit only need check once per hour for cold and exposure damage.

A character who takes any nonlethal damage from cold or exposure is beset by frostbite or hypothermia (treat her as fatigued). These penalties end when the character recovers the nonlethal damage she took from the cold and exposure.

Okay I'm trying to anticipate my players ideas which should happen in tomorrow nights game.
One of them will be wearing animal pelts and two of them will be wearing Boots of the Winterland. HOWEVER, two of the characters currently have NO protection. If they fail there Fort saves and the party stops and they put on the Boots for an hour, are they cured?

So, does this mean if a character is wearing the animal pelts in 40 degree or below BUT above 0 degree weather that they need to make a check once every 6 hours, 12 hours, once a day?

I realize that the Boots work as the Endure Elements spell, "A creature protected by endure elements suffers no harm from being in a hot or cold environment. It can exist comfortably in conditions between -50 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (-45 and 60 degrees Celsius) without having to make Fortitude saves. The creature's equipment is likewise protected."

Cold Dangers: "A character cannot recover from the damage dealt by a cold environment until she gets out of the cold and warms up again."

Healing Nonlethal Damage: "You heal nonlethal damage at the rate of 1 hit point per hour per character level."

So if the character has a higher character level than the amount of nonlethal damage they took, then yes, wearing the boots for an hour would cure them. Of course, then the player who loaned the boots will probably be making a Fort save...

In 20-degree weather:

A character that is unprotected must make Fortitude saves each hour.

If furs or a cold-weather outfit is considered protected, then a character wearing either of those does not need to make saves.

In Negative 10-degree weather:

A character that is unprotected must make Fortitude saves every 10 minutes.
A character wearing Furs must make Fortitude saves with a +2 bonus every 10 minutes.
A character wearing a Cold-Weather Outfit must make Fortitude saves with a +5 circumstance bonus every hour.
A character wearing Boots of the Winterlands is unaffected by the cold.

In Negative 60-degree weather:

Everyone is taking 1d6 points of lethal damage per minute (no save). In addition, a character must make a Fortitude save (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Furs and/or cold-weather gear provide a bonus on that save.

Grick,
Thanks again for answering another of my questions. I just posted another question here on this forum...hint..hint.

Where did you find the answers to this question? The answers you found succinctly answered my questions and even a few I didn't think of!

There're all in the Core Rulebook. Grick posted links to each relevant section of the rules in the PRD. If you're running a winter-themed campaign, I recommend learning those sections of the rules... <puts on sunglasses> ...cold.
