My latest character concept is for that of a Reanimator- the Alchemist archetype provided in Ultimate Magic, but before I can begin to worry about things such as ability scores, skills, feats, etc., one thing bothers me- Deity selection. I want this to be a legal Pathfinder Society character, so worship of evil deities, while still an option, is frowned upon. That said, I'm having trouble figuring out what sort of deity would allow for things such as the creation of undead and preserving the living body through mummification (Specifically the type attained through alchemical discovery, instead of becoming an undead outright.)
The goal of this character, as I see it, is not to gain mastery over undeath, but to blur the lines between living and dead, and even go so far as to attain immortality, studying what can be done to stay the hand of death.
My first instinct was to worship Pharasma, but the creation of undead, and even trying to avoid death is pretty close to outright heresy in her book, so I doubt I'd be able to pull this off. Still, if you have any ideas or suggestions for deity selection, or even playing with a heretical mindset, please let me know!
Fandarra and Shyka are good options.
Both are non-evil Death Domain gods.
Fandarra, I was familiar with but forgot, but Shyka is new to me. Still, now I need a reason why an alchemist would worship a Giant god or one of the Eldest, which I am still very unfamiliar with the latter.
Abadar would probably not object, as long as you obtain your "experimental specimens" legally.
Irori sprung to my mind. Looking for ways to improvement/perfection and immortality fits his MO and he looks kindly on advancing Knowledge too.
Also, he is LN.
One of the Great Old Ones or Outer Gods.
Name the character Herbert West.
Nethys is all about destruction and creation through magic. He's never looked very picky to me.
Have you looked at demon lords? Abraxas and Haagenti are about magic and science. Demon lord worship sometimes carries wierd practices with it and is not always the best for group cohesion though.
Good choices, all. Nethys was a consideration as well, and may well fit the final idea, if not Irori. Unfortunately, Demon Lords are almost out of the question, being CE. I know it's still technically possible to worship them as CN, but explaining this off is a bad idea for Society games.
And I've read the Herbert West story. Haha. I don't think I'll infringe upon that though :P
If I'm worshipping a demon lord I usually keep it a secret from the party in PFS. Similarly I'll never admit I worship Calistria. Not always the best looks around the table.
Nethys is great at being all magic and not very resticting. He actually comes up in a scenario or 2 I think since he's core.
I was considering either Dwarf or Half-Orc, with human or gnome as last resort ideas. Human Reanimators are the easiest to pull off, but where's the fun in being simple? :P
Well, throw in the Adopted trait, and choose Gnome.
Gnomes are from First World, home of the Eldest, and there lies in the tie to Shyka.
If we were playing Nobilis, I would be the deity Lamashtu, and I would disguise myself and offer you "knowledge and power beyond compare" and then watch as you become my pawn in a far far greater game.
Oddly enough Lamashtu doesn't seem like that sort to me. The demon lord of knowledge and alchemy on the other hand does that as his MO. Haagenti is a seemingly nice guy who comes and offers you knowledge and is possibly the least destructive demon lord. Whats the worst that could happen?
If I had to be evil, Zyphus would readily fit the bill. Maybe even Groetus. Both cases would depend on creating "accidents" with my formulas, and thus furthering the cause of my deity. But alas, Society characters are not allowed to be evil. So I'm stuck looking for good and neutral ones.
Well your allowed to worship evil dieties. There were several worshipers/a cleric of Zon Kuthon at my tables back when I played PFS games. At worst you get bad looks.
Neutral Necromancy isn't a thing in the current golarion is it?
I had no idea there were "bad looks" that came from worshiping evil gods.
What exactly is problem?
What is behind the worship, that would make others scowl?
Are there problems that stem from this worship?
There's "White Necromancers", which worship Pharasma. they practice the spells of necromancy but do not create undead unless absolutely necessary. And sadly NE deities are still off the table, since you can't just be Neutral and worship them. So that's one choice gone.
You could also be from Geb.
Not everyone Geb is evil.
In society play your expected not to be evil. Too many immature playeres take CE as an excuse to burn orphanages and eat babies(demonic obediance is just out). It also helps keep the game more PG.
Some players can't stand the idea of someone being evil. Evil = immaturity. Its a stigma that they can't help. When I say I'm a samurai they will think of me as honorable despite me being an urban barbarian. When I say I am a barbarian who worships jezelda the werewolf queen they give me a bad look, even if its a long backstory and I'm not burning orphanages and eating babies, just someone who understands savagery and willingly avoid society. Society being supposedly goody becuase no evil, attracts players with this stigma.
To be fair, many players can't do evil well. They are so out in the open and lacking subtlety. Some just take chaotic and run with that instead. Its why its banned in some campaigns to help keep things under control.
Is that more understandable?
Worshiping an evil god, and being evil, are two different things.
I realize that, but not everyone does. As I said, its just a stigma some people have.
