Can a paladin spellcraft to identify magical items?

Rules Questions

Can a character without 'identify magic' but with spellcraft use his spellcraft to identify what the magical items are IF he otherwise knows they are magical but hasn't detected it himself (other party members use detect magic and tell him it is magical)?

The character has to use detect magic of identify themselves in order to find the properties of the magic item in question.

Liberty's Edge

As Wraith says, a character can use detect magic or identify only if the character herself uses the spell. The Paladin spell list doesn't include either. If the Paladin can gain the benefit of the spell in another way, she can then use Spellcraft to identify the properties of a magic item. This could be through use of Use Magic Device and a wand or scroll, through the use of a wondrous item that provides detect magic, a racial ability, or similar means.

Shadow Lodge

I asked something similar once and had it explained.

Just being told it is magical isn't enough because the way spellcraft works to identify what it is is by seeing the auras that Detect Magic creates. If you can't use Detect Magic to see them yourself, being told "it's magic, it's a red aura, it's evocation" - doesn't help.

Turns out magic is actually quite a precise art ;)
