Swift Action trip?

Rules Questions

The Exchange

So we ran into some Grindlow's and they have a swift action trip called Tangling Tentacles. the monster doesn't have the trip MA nor does it have Imp. Trip. Would this Extraordinary Ability cause an Attack of Opportunity?

Grindylow

Swift Action

Attack of Opportunity

Neither Swift Actions nor Attacks of Opportunity say that swift action do not provoke. It gives the example of a swift spell but specifically calls out that Quickened Spells do not provoke.

I would say that ability provokes, as written, but I'm not sure if it was intended to.

The Exchange

Yeah that's what we were thinking.

Just odd wording...

Grand Lodge

The trip combat manoeuvre provokes, but not everything that constitutes a trip attack does. The Actions in Combat table shows that combat manoeuvres usually provoke AoO and Ex abilities usually don't.

The Exchange

And now you see the problem...

Not particularly.

Two kinds of actions provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing a distracting act in a threatened square.

You determine if an action is a distracting act by referring to the Actions in Combat table.

The relevant entry on this table is "Use extraordinary ability, Attack of opportunity: No".

It seems straightforward.

I'm in agreement with Starglim on this one. Since the Grindylows' ability is an Extraordinary Ability, it does not provoke an AoO.
