Panther Style & Reach

Panther Style

Benefit: While using this style, when an opponent makes an attack of opportunity against you for moving through a threatened square, you can spend a swift action to make a retaliatory unarmed strike attack against that opponent. Your attack is resolved after the triggering attack of opportunity.

Is the retaliatory strike of panther style ineffective against opponents that have a longer reach?

My monk has a reach of 5 feet, when I trigger an attack of opportunity from an opponent that has more than 5 feet reach can I make the strike using panther style? Or is it out of my reach and can't I make the attack?

I have encountered this issue with one of the players in our group. Did you find a resolution to your question?

Since this occurs while you're moving, and since the retaliatory strike is specifically made after the AoO is resolved, it would be reasonable to allow you to take the extra 5 ft of movement (or more, depending on the opponent's reach) to get close enough before taking the retaliatory strike (as long as you still have movement left).

Beyond that, if the opponent is too far away for you to hit, it would be a waste of an action.

The third feat in the Panther chain makes the retaliatory strike resolve before the AoO. I think the only way to accomplish this is if you have natural reach from being Large or bigger.

If your oponent has longer reach than you do, sorry, you're SOL.
