I am currently GM'ing a homebrew campaign. I have a level 11 fighter that just purchased a Giant Owl pet, whom he had battle trained. He is now training it as a mount. He has only one rank in ride, so he wanted to ditch his ring of protection and pick up a "ring of riding +5". I told him that it didnt exist. He swears it's legit. He says there are rings for every other skill so why not ride. I reasoned it that there are spells for those skills but not ride. He is so butthurt about it so he got me to open it up to the forum.
So here is the question at hand.
Should a ring of riding be allowed, and if so what plus should it give, and about what price.

Sure, why not. It would cost the same as any other +5 skill ring (e.g. 2,500g). There's also the Improved version that gives +10 for 10,000g.
I see no harm in it. His plan to fly around on a giant owl may seem like a fun idea until you hit it with a gale and smash it into the ground. There are spells to deal with flying targets and I imagine the villains would hear about his owl and prepare for it accordingly.

The flawed turquoise sphere ioun stone grants a +5 competence bonus to Ride and costs 5000gp. If he really wants it as a ring, charge him 2500gp -- handily, also the cost of a ring of climbing -- since the ioun stone is slotless and the ring is not.

Yep - I can't see any problem with it either.
One of my characters (In a game I don't GM) rides a Hippogrif on occasion. When he does, he takes off his Ring of Jumping and puts on his ring of Feather Fall.
I can't see any problem with swapping rings in and out - although I would rule that as a full action ...

Ring of Riding... I agree with the above posters... no problem with it..
However.. I would not allow PCs to just go grab any skill and put it on a Ring... otherwise EVERY character that has ever lived is going to get a Ring of Perception+10... or UMD..ect
There are other skills that are used more than any other in the game.. and Ring of Skills+ can be abused just like any other magic item.
With that said..
Is there a Druid in the party? You are going to need Raise Animal (Companion) spell.
Also if I were that fighter I would invest in another ring.
Ring of Feather Falling (you could put it on the Giant Owl.. along with other magic items)

I can't see any problem with a ring of ride. Yes, it is a custom magic item, but it is nowhere near unreasonable.
But for fluff, I would suggest getting him a magic saddle (or straps more likely for the owl) that impart a +5 bonus to Ride. Slightly better since he doesn't have to spend an item slot, but much more fitting.

The skill items are pretty generic and one aspect of the Custom Magic Item Rules where they are cut and dry. +5 = 2,500gp (double for slotless). +10 = 10,000gp (double for slotless). Easy :)
Alternately, he can add Jousting (UE p120, +5 Ride bonus) to his armor. The price is 1.5x normal since it is a second ability added to armor.

There is also a saddle that gives +5 to ride (and maybe a secondary bonus). I think it's saddle of horse mastery or somesuch. No reason why a version of that can't be used on an owl.
