Whirlwind attack: monk with reach weapon + unarmed

Hi,

we recently had the question coming up:
A monk using a reach weapon and doing a whirlwind attack - can he attack using the reach weapon PLUS attack adjacent foes with unarmed strikes?

One of our players said yes, because the monk doesn't need to have free hands for unarmed strikes...

You can also use a reach weapon and armor spikes for the same effect.

If you have the Improved Unarmed Strike feat, you do not even need to be a Monk to do it.

Non-Monks can kick and headbutt just fine.
