So we're going into Book 6 and my DM and I are confused - I have Suishen, and it seems like we've only had an opportunity to unlock 2 of its additional powers because there's only 2 official 'Five Storms' oni in the first 5 chapters. Is this right, or are we missing something? It'll suck to not get it fully unlocked till after the AP's over!
Yeah, the writers didn't provide enough unlock opportunities, I can tell you that. Aside from Omoyamani and Munusakuru, I already added a few more "Five Storm" boss encounters to the AP when I saw that problem.
I'm planning to make the Fire Yai at the end of Tide of Honor a member of the Five Storms and also have that lonely Ogre Mage in The Frozen Storm actually turn out to be a Atumahata who is a Five Storms member. Also I am planning on shortening out Munusakurus dungeon and adding the Ruby Phoenix Tournament into the AP, where there is one oni just standing around but who never does anything. She will turn out to be either an Earth or Wind Yai and, of course, a member of the Five Storms.
Let's see here...Kimandatsu in the same module you pick Suishen up, then Munuskaru in Forest of Spirits, and Nigankona at the end of Tide of Honor makes 3. And there are several Five Storms lieutenants to be found when you assault the palace at the end, before you reach the final boss.
According to one of the Paizo guys ( sorry, I don't remember if it was James or Rob or someone else ) only the "end bosses" of each AP module count as members of the Five Storms, so mere lieutenants normally would not.
If only "boss monster" oni count, then I'll have to add a few more onis to the game because my players beat Kimandatsu *before* retrieving Suishen.

I picture Suishen as an arcane amnesiac slowly gaining bits of itself back. I think it'll gain it's last hidden power when (and I'm making this last part up) it encounters Big A at the end of the 6th book and realizes that it was IT (Suishen before it housed the soul of the first Amatatsu) that slew Big A all those years past, with the Seal then causing the curse Big A was inflicted with.
Hmmmm. I like that scene in my head with my party's Magus wielding Suishen :)
