Player Requests a Hatchet Man

Advice

Got a player that wants to play an axe wielding character: Either a Boarding Axe, a Handaxe, or a Throwing Axe.

He said such an axe in conjunction with a shield or dual wielding is preferable.

I went over the common dual wielding classes (Rogue, Ranger, Fighter, he liked the Freebooter Ranger especially) and said I would look into a shield set up as well, so he has some options.

Im a bit busy, so some help from the boards would be much appreciated!

IN SUMMATION: I am requesting a build that uses an axe and shield, or two axes. 20 point buy, any class or race works.

Thanks in advance!

There is a viking template in People of the North that could be what you're looking for.

what do you mean by Viking Template? a new archetype? or a NPC stat block, or...?

I meant archetype. Its for the fighter and swaps heavy armour and armour trainig for better shield defence, and weapon training for a reduced form of rage.

Hobgoblin, Ranger.

Nab a pair of Agile Throwing Axes.

Why agile throwing axes? Couldn't a STR based TWF Ranger do just as well, if not better?

I have a hard time picturing anything but a Dwarven Ranger dual wielding axes.

I wonder why?

Bonus to attack rolls and damage based off one stat. This syncs with racial bonus to Dex.

The PC will have higher AC, better Reflex saves, better Acrobatics and Stealth.

Okay, I can see that. I think the player is leaning towards a possibly Ulfen character, small and less suited to a straight up warrior's life... so your suggestion of DEX based works well.

Freebooter (which he liked) also works from this angle... though hobgoblin will not.

In any case, why throwing axes instead of a Boarding Axe with a x3 crit and slashing OR piercing?

Also, any way to work in a shield?

Grand Lodge

Well, any race with a bonus to Dex works.

Throwing Axe allows for Melee, and Ranged, and using this method, uses the same stats for both.

A Quickdraw Shield will allow you to don or put away the shield as a Free action, as long as you have the Quickdraw feat.

This will allow a full attack, then don the shield, then put it away on your turn to two weapon fight with the Throwing Axes.

This means you will have both the twin axe style, and the shield and axe combo.

OKay, a few more questions:

1.) Is there a better method to make thrown weapons return than the returning property? I recall an item/enhancement somewhere, but cannot remember the name or the book.

2.) Are there any feats i should mention beyond the usual TWF feats?

3.) Is Freebooter Ranger a good choice, or is there a better suggestion I could make? The player is relatively new, so I am trying to keep him happy and returning to my table.

Thanks for all the help!

1) Called weapon property, then Blinkback Belt.

2) Deadly Aim, Double Slice, Reckless Aim.

3) Infiltrator. Note that once he gets the Instant Enemy spell, his Favored Enemy can be anything.

Double Slice... correct me if I'm wrong, but that will do nothing for someone wielding agile axes? Is there another feat to increase damage?

Reckless Aim... okay. I dunno if its entirely worth a feat though.

The problem I have with Instant Enemy is that it won't be available until at least 13th level. But, good advice, its basically what i said to him.

I assume with Deadly Aim, you are pushing for a sort of switch hitter, with the Ranger TWF style. Is that right?

I bet it is for the returning/calling/blinking back axe

Grand Lodge

Agile allows you to replace strength with dexterity. Double Slice allows for full strength to your off-hand. Full strength is replaced with full dexterity.

You can pick up a wand of Instant Enemy as well.

I enjoy and play a freebooter, switch-hitter. My cold iron boarding axe is his back-up light and underwater weapon. I (and my party) like the untyped BBEG bonus plus the extra +2 to flanking.

You've said shield several times, so go freebooter with the shield combat build. TWF at 2nd and Shield Master at 6th with Shield Slam and Improved Shield Bash and Power Attack along the way. His boarding axe is his light weapon in the TWF fighting with his Heavy Shield is his non-light weapon.

cheers
