Greater Command & Invisibility

Rules Questions

If an enemy casts Greater Command against a group of PCs, and one of them is invisible, are they affected?

Greater Command isn't an AOE, it just gets to target a bunch of things. If you're invisible (and the caster doesn't have See Invisibility or something similar active), you can't be targeted, so you aren't affected.

In general, things like Fireball that target an area, such as a burst or cone or line, can hit invisible people, but things like Greater Command that target a bunch of individual targets cannot.

I thought that might be the case. It seemed counter-intuitive since being invisible wouldn't stop you hearing the command but it's consistent.

You could equally ask why only one person is affected by the first-level version of Command when everyone else can hear it just as easily, or why Greater Command only affects chosen opponents and not allies or nearby bystanders.

It's more than just saying one word; you also need to focus on someone to make them obey. That's why you need to target, which you can't if they're invisible.
