Range 0 ft.

Effect one duplicate creature

Duration instantaneous

Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

This spell makes a duplicate of any humanoid/monstrous humanoid. The duplicated creature appears to be the same as the original, but it has only half of the original creature's levels or HD (and the appropriate hit points, feats, skill ranks, and special abilities for a creature of that level or HD) and lacks any scars, tattoo's or other identifying marks of the original. You can't create a duplicate of a creature who’s HD or levels exceed your caster level.

The duplicate possesses the same personality and memories as the original with the full realization of the fact that it is a duplicate created by the caster, this inevitably leads to a shift in personality and alignment (to mach the caster) over the course of 1d4 months. At all times, the duplicate remains under the caster's absolute command. No special telepathic link exists, so command must be exercised in some other manner. A duplicate has no ability to become more powerful. It cannot increase its level, HD, or abilities but it may retrain its skill ranks, languages, and feats.

To create the duplicate, you must have a pieces of flesh, hair, nails, scales, blood, or some combination of the like with a volume of at least 1 lb. that was taken from the original creature's living body. The flesh needs to be fresh. Once the spell is cast, the duplicate must be grown in a laboratory for 3d4 months.

  • Why did you put it into the Necromancy school, and not Conjuration [creation]?
  • What are the bodies made from, and do they leave corpses?
  • What is the creature type of a Counterfeit?
  • If it has all the memories of the original, doesn't creating a Counterfeit of the BBEG make a lot of adventures a push-over?
  • Does a Counterfeit have a soul; can it be resurrected?
  • One pound of "stuff" from the original body is a lot of nail-clippings, and shouldn that be a Material Component?
  • Are the "laboratory supplies worth 5,000 gp" supposed to be irrespective of the hit-dice of the resulting Counterfeit?
  • Can a Counterfeit be made of a creature whose sum of HD and levels exceeds the caster's CL?

•Why did you put it into the Necromancy school, and not Conjuration [creation]?
The bodies are grown thus nucromancy not conjuration.

•What are the bodies made from, and do they leave corpses?
A pound of flesh from the original. They do leave a corpse.

•What is the creature type of a Counterfeit?
Humanoid/monstrous humanoid as approprite.

•If it has all the memories of the original, doesn't creating a Counterfeit of the BBEG make a lot of adventures a push-over?
You have to catch and hold it first as you need a pound of it's flesh, and it takes 3 to 12 months to grow.

•Does a Counterfeit have a soul; can it be resurrected?
Yes, and Yes however I would say that it is free willed after it's resurection.

•One pound of "stuff" from the original body is a lot of nail-clippings, and shouldn that be a Material Component?
You'd be amazed at how much blood weighs. It is a material component!

•Are the "laboratory supplies worth 5,000 gp" supposed to be irrespective of the hit-dice of the resulting Counterfeit?
Yes

•Can a Counterfeit be made of a creature whose sum of HD and levels exceeds the caster's CL?
NO

An update with a fiew changes of note.

A Counterfeit no longer becomes free willed if resurected and dose not change cerature type either.

The duplicate now possesses a similar personality and the hazy half formed memories of the original.

The duplicate's abilities may now be altered.

Three drops of the casters blood are now required as a material component.

Flavor TXT: Typically used to create specialized servants such as translators, body guards, assassins, concubines and the like. It is common practice to wizard mark the face, forehead, arms or chest of the Counterfeit and use permanency to enhance these servants with Telepathic bond. Stat tomes are also a favorite. Having these servants is considered something of a status symbol among wizards the more exotic and rare the better and outsiders are preferred for such status seekers.
