Is it going to be a problem if my miniature is a little large?

Pathfinder Society

Just got a reaper mini I'd bought online in the mail and its a little larger than I'd hoped. The character himself is fairly normal but his stance is very wide and his base will probably poke a bit into one or two of the surrounding squares. In a home game I wouldn't be worried, and most of the dudes I play with in society are pretty lax, but I'm also going to a convention in a couple weeks. I'd hate to put all this effort into painting this guy if someone is gonna prevent me from using him.

How big of a deal is this? Have you ever seen a society dm refuse to let a character use a certain mini for any reason?

Thanks.

Here's the mini if it helps.

a friend of mine uses a Lego figure... and he works fine. don't go crazy with it, and see if you can get some type of "stand" to better define which sq. you're in and you sould be fine for 99.9% of the Judges out there.

but, as always, YMMV (there is the other 0.1%)

See if you can get a 1-inch square base and adhere it corner to corner. If the ground overlaps, you can always use snips to trim the base down. I always try to keep my base within the 1-inch squares used on most maps, though some tend to have swords or arms extending out a little. But that's me.

I would agree with nosig and Sior - if you can trim the base or rebase the fig onto a standard 1" square, having arms and weapons poke out isn't usually a problem. Since PF doesn't have facing rules, you can usually orient the figure so as not to bump into others when it gets crowded.

And if you put him on a 1-inch square base, you can orient him diagonally to help him fit.

As said above, most all GMs will be fine with it, but ...

It is considered poor form to use a mini that keeps others from properly positioning their minis next to it. It could annoy others at the table, though they probably won't say anything.

The thing that annoys me the most of some miniatures is that they just won't stand up or they don't stay up well. As long as the base can fit mostly in the square and it doesn't fall over if someone blows on it, it should be fine.

hit a hardware store and pick up some 1" fender washers... exactly 1" dia., and they glue to the base of the figure (even those top heavy ones with the round plastic bases). It (often) adds enough weight to the base to to make the figure more stable - and is really easy to add to the figure.

I have a player sho does this as well. He uses one of the flat 2x2 bricks to give the fig something to stand on so it doesnt fall over constantly. Works well enough for him. :)

Been there. Some of my minis have either small round bases or long narrow bases, and they always fall over. So I take those problem minis and put them on a plastic base Sooo much better. Looking at the ogre in the original post, it might have that problem without a base as well, not just size.

I always try to carry a blob of sculpy in my gaming backpack. Its easy to just take a bit and plop it under an unsteady mini to give it more weight and a flat bottom.

I use poster tack to attach minis to my Flaming sphere mini. :P

The ogre actually stands pretty well. It's a heavy enough figure that the weight keeps it from tipping too easily. The problem with putting him on another base is that A: His feet are so far apart they'd barely be able to share a 1 inch base, and he's probably be alot less stable, and B: The sculpt is really embeded into the base of the figurine. Wherease some minis I've worked with are just standing on their flat base, this guy's feet are somewhat sunken into the base itself. I'm pretty sure I'd need a dremel to get him out and I don't currently have one.

For the moment I'm planning to leave him but also bring along a small plastic mini that looks similar so I can substitute it if someone has a problem or we're fighting in a really enclosed space.
