I'm at the top of a hill, with a sled, and the zombies are milling about beneath(?) me.
Given my location, the horde's location and density, the salient features of ambient geography, natural resources, and what I know about zombie behavior, does it look like a viable idea to:
Push the sled downhill by itself, maybe weighed down with some handy natural detritus to make it move faster and more loudly and generally be more interesting, If I can find and catch some with sufficiently little effort, I include on the sled's payload a bit of local fauna, enough to generate a smell.
I think it would be worth 1 bullet to kill a squirrel or something for this task, provided the gunshot noise by itself didn't attract the zombies, which depends entirely on their senses and sensibilities - sure a gunshot is a noise, but it's a distinctly mechanical noise. Do they necessarily grasp a connection between guns and edible wielders, and for that matter, could they possibly have any self-preservation instinct that might impart any element at all of impulse to avoid gun sounds? If they can't see the source of the noise, they can't discriminate between a lone Glock and a single shot from an tommy gun, or guess how many shots the shooter could have left, could they?
Failing birds or mammals, how about a temptingly noisome paste made from stink bugs, which can presently be found in the northeastern US, spread on leaves and some of my rags (careful not to get any on myself) and placed on the sled?
However I work the above out, the objective of all this, of course, is to provoke the zombies into chasing after the sled, straight into the river if at all possible (by angling the sled's descent in the best direction).
Call this all a massive question-web. I'm laying out a plan here, not yet committing to an action.

You think hard about weighing the "sled" down and pushing it down the hill. But you begin to look at it and looks like it would not slide like a sled so well because it was build like a indian travois made to be pulled behind you.
The majority of the Zed's mingle about around the bridge preventing you from getting across and the bridge is a couple hundred yards away.

Powering the phone on I set the timer on it's loudest setting to go off in 10 minutes and place it within earshot of the zombies but far enough away that it will take them a while to get there. During the ten minutes I make my way stealthily down around the Zombies towards the bridge and hide, waiting for the alarm to go off and draw them away.

You set the phone alarm to go off in 10 minutes and set the volume to max. You set it within easy earshot of the zeds and then make your way as quite and as close as you can and out of sight of the zeds. What seems like forever you don't quite make the spot you wanted but you are away when the phone alarm goes off and the zeds pop to attention and start moving towards the alarming cell phone. You know have a clear shot across the bridge or the water below.

The zeds swarm to the phone and seeing it is nothing look about to see if anything else could cause this. You get to the bridge when a lone zed appears in the middle of the bridge on the far side and moans loudly at you and starts to move towards you. the zombies on the hill hear it's moan and start to shamble down the hill to cut off your escape. You can hear the water below.

The fall would be over 10 feet to the water and below the bridge you guess it to be at the deepest point 5 - 10 feet deep. it is not moving fast but currents can be tricky, it could be faster and with under currents.
You look to see if you go slide down the embankment to the water and decided that you might get hurt from as simple as a bumps and bruises to a broken bone. If you can make it to the water you see things you might be able to use to use to keep yourself afloat as the current takes you down the river. How ever your ammo might get wet and ruined if you take a swim.

((No Water fall, the fall to the water)
You take the water jumping off and curling into a ball waiting for the hit. A huge splash erupts out of the water and you managed to hit a deep section but the current pulls you down along with all the gear you have on. You struggle to reach the surface but the items you wear as well as the clothing are not helping.
Your hat is someplace you have no idea of, the branch is in your way that was for a club. If you do not get to the surface soon you will drowned, but all the extra stuff is not helping. You can sacrifice all or nothing and hope for the best

You struggle dropping the branch/club and manage to get the keys, money out and drop them. Not enough, you drop the wire cutters, The satchel is also a problem but as you struggle you break surface sucking in the precious air finally able to breath. The current speeds up but the water gets shallower. The current though is to much to let you stand Now what you think as you glance and see no zeds. Your in the middle of the river.

I mentally kick myself for getting rid of the money (which, if paper or plastic, would have done very little to affect my mobility in water) when I could have gotten rid of the flashlight (something that would have actually been making a difference), and bought a new one if I needed to. It does also occur to me (speed of thought, mind you) that trusting the town in front of me to have open shops to offer me one was chancy, but nonetheless, I'm really feeling bad about ditching my money of all things.
Not that I'm going to take any major risks for it, under the circumstances, but is the money, in fact, hopelessly lost?
How wide is the river?
How good a swimmer am I?
Can I see anything significant (threat, way to get out, misc) downriver?
Is it at all conceivable that I could use a gunshot to propel myself across the way (I've heard you could hypothetically do something similar to propel yourself across the surface of the Moon)?
What happened to Techvi? Is that still you?
IceniQueen

In all the river by guess is 25 yards wide. With the current and water depth you figure if you put your feet forward you might be able to do better and to avoid hitting your head on a large rock, however you would be at the whims of the current and who knows where that will take you... further down steam into further danger? The wrong side of the river?. If you go head first you can manage to guide your way but there is always bashing your head on the rocks and that would be worse, but you know you could reach the other side barring any impact with a rock or sunken log.
The satchel you will continue to struggle with, especially if going head first. If you go head first you most likely will lose it. If feet first you can keep it. The money is gone, the current taking it downstream like a leaf. Of course you could lose more and make it easier to reach your destination.
The gun shot... try it and see. Physics say No. Desperation and panic says Yes

You start to swim. The satchel in your way and causing nothing but problems. You make your way slowly towards the shore but the current still moves you downstream. A hug boulder looms in front of you. Ditch the satchel and it's contents or take the boulder that will have an undertow and bash your brains in. If you lose the satchel you can make it to shore but the satchel and all contents will be lost. No time to dig and remove. all or nothing.

You make it to shore soggy to the bone. Lucky the fall air is not overly chill. You see no zeds in your path to the town. But that does not mean that zeds are not in the town. In a worst case scenario it could be full of them. best scenario a few. You know in the town you will find water or something to drink and possibly food and other things needed. The zeds however may impede some or all of this depending on what you do and how you do it.
You look about and down the road to your right heading away from the town are a few farm houses.
Farm where you might find useful items and few Zeds. or town where you know you will find useful items and most likely many zeds

The farm house looks to be empty as you draw closer. an old barn, chicken shed and storage shed are not to far away. An old open cab Case tractor and various farm implements sit near the barn. Dead animals litter the field most look to have been torn to pieces by the Zeds. A ford pickup truck sites with the door open and a rotting, mangled corpse lays half in and out of the truck, dried blood all about.
The barn door is slightly open while the farm house the doors and windows are closed. On the cloths line sheets and bedding hang loosely never brought in by the person who hung them out to dry.
The house, the barn or the shed or the truck? Or back to the town which is about 2 mile walk.

You look about and see some tree's and bushes. All look healthy but there are branches up above you could probably climb to to get a branch to use as a small club that might be used a few times on a Zed's head. You also see a stack of logs/firewood as you get nearer by the shed. They look to have been split and a wooden stump sits near the pile of wood. no weapon however is stuck in the stump. Who ever owned it took care to put it away after use or someone else already took it.

You see no open windows on the shed. It is dark and the door is closed. The barn has a slightly ajar door and it is also dark. all the windows on it are closed, those that have glass. Even the wooden window covers are closed. Looking up however you see the hayloft door is open. A chain lift sits on the ground that leads to the hayloft. All it would require is a lot of work.

A rat moves about. Enough sun which is going down still lights enough of the inside shed.
Inside you see a bench, hand tools (wenches, hammers etc), a lawn mower, chainsaw on the bench (the chain missing), an axe, a gas can, oil cans, garden tools, trash bags (GLAD), Post hole digger, containers of small boxes in another plastic storage box the kind people use to hold nuts, bolts, nails etc, paper bag with a nail sticking out, bags of seeds and a wooden box closed up.

If the zombies here are anything like zombies in D&D and any number of other zombie stories, I don't want my melee weapon to be a bludgeon. If I can't have the chainsaw, I want that axe. I make a mental note of the flammables too.
First off, I get rid of the rat. Pick it up in one of the GLAD bags (not sealing it, just trying to be sanitary, not cruel), toss it way far outside.
Can I close and seal the shed to my satisfaction?
If so, I want to do so and rest before all else - not necessarily sleep, just rest.
Maybe I munch on some seeds too, if they're the right kind.
When I feel fresher I'll investigate the paper bag and the wooden box (which I should be able to open pretty easily with all the available tools).
IceniQueen
|
You open the door to the shed quickly grab a bag as the rat runs about hiding trying to get away. As you grab a plastic bag it scampers out the door. Lucky you did have to deal with it. You quickly close the door behind you. The door had opened out so the only way you could prevent further entry would be to nail it shut. It has a simple latch on it that keeps the door shut If zeds come you will be trapped in the shed
You take the axe, the blade is well kept and sharp. You quickly look to the seeds and they look to be chemically treated, a fine purple powder covers it. You might be safe to eat them, but most likely not.
You see in the fading light. The paper bag holds nails about 3" long flat headed. The box as you slide the lid off looks to be a new 2 stroke motor possibly for a pump or generator
You sit down on the wooden floor and relax against the bench, night is falling and the light is fading. You feel extremely thirsty and tired and as your stomach growls in hunger.

You step out into the fading light and make your way towards the house. The night is very quite accept for the crickets that are chirping. As you make your way around the house looking for a spigot you notice a cellar door that rises at a slight 10 - 15 degree angle out of the ground the door closed. On the same side of the house you see a coiled up unattached garden hose and a spigot. A sprinkler sits on the ground near it. You think you see what looks like a small herb, vegetable and flower garden near by and 4 tree's that are hard to see what type of tree they are, maybe fruit tree's.
You see something move out of the corner of your eye.
