If the one between Latharel and Trag is still standing (I assume he was hit for 7) then I stay where I am - otherwise I assume Kernsten took care of the one directly North of Latharel - he takes the long route around to move 10 feet north to be back in flanking but avoiding AoO

Squaring up against the kobolds, Targ manages to get in a strike against the one closest to him, the kobold crumpling from the blow. Likewise, Kernsten makes his way around the edge of the fight to where he can easily slam one of the kobolds with his flail, while Latharel moves up to help flank the remaining kobold with Targ, landing a lucky hit with his sword, and the last kobold goes down.

Lillia moves up and stares at the statue grimly, ready to use her evil eye once she can see the hidden enemy. Crar does the same, moving up and muttering with one of his amulets in hand.

At nearly the same time, another shimmering ray shoots out from behind the shoulder of the statue, aimed at Crar. The ray hits the eagle shaman, but he manages to shrug off its effects. However, the effort involved means he has lost the spell he was concentrating on.

End of Round 2. All the kobolds are on the ground bleeding out, well done. I've tried to approximate positions based on your descriptions. Crar was casting a summon nature's ally spell to summon a dog with scent ability.

Lillia carefully watches the statue as Crar's spell is interrupted, and quickly darts across to the corner and drops to one knee to peer around as she begins a spell of her own.

Move to the square directly south of Targ's original position, to get cover from the corner, and drop prone to get a further +4 vs ranged attacks. Should be AC 19 vs ranged touch attacks from the vicinity of the statue, then start to cast sleep.

Round 4
Targ moves up, scanning the area around the statue for another glimpse of that katana that he saw. However, it seems well hidden now.

Kernsten moves up as well, prepared for anything. Skirting around the statue, he moves up beside the well, looking for any movement.

Lillian darts over to the corner and crouches down to present a smaller target, and starts preparing a spell. Lillian, are you targeting the statue with your spell? From the way I'm seeing everyone's moves, it looks like the 10ft radius would affect either Kernsten or Targ.

[ooc] I've updated this round's moves so far - here

Latharel also moves carefully closer - looking out for a flame.

That would be 30 foot west - 10 feet south of Kernsten at the other side of the statue.

I was hoping that Targ hadn't moved that far, to be honest... would you object too strongly to taking advantage of the new initiative system by waiting until everyone else has acted?

I don't think it's a problem, but let me make sure I understand - you want to delay your action until the rest of the party has acted, then cast the spell? Or, do you mean for Targ to delay his action until after the rest of the party has acted and the spell has been cast? In that scenario, I would say that Targ has stated that he's moving forward cautiously, so you could argue that Lillia motions to him to wait as he's moving slowly, and she instead takes her action. I'd buy that. Just let me know which is correct (to make sure I haven't gotten the wrong end of the stick), and I'll post results.

End of Round 4

Latharel carefully moves closer, helping to flank the statue. He looks for the hidden assailant, but cannot see it. Crar however, moving up to crouch behind a ruined wall, catches a glimpse of the sheathed blade. "There! It's hanging on to the shoulders of that statue!"

At that moment, you see movement on the statue. A smooth-skinned, hairless humanoid with piercing eyes glares around at each of you as it mutters an incantation. Its skin constantly shifts and changes to mirror its surroundings. Finally able to see the shifty creature, Latharel, Kernsten, and Targ immediately leap in to strike, Kernsten and Latharel both managing to inflict deep wounds. The blows cause the creature to be distracted and lose its spell, and in response it slips down the statue and across to the top of the well, preparing to drop below.

Since we had already posted everyone's moves and results above, I interpreted Lillia's action as delaying in order to unleash her spell at the beginning of next round (round 5). She should get to act first next round. To save time, I rolled your attacks o' opportunity on your behalf, let me know if your attack or damage bonuses were incorrect.

I've realized I keep forgetting to post this detail - like the other statues you have encountered in the keep, this one also has a single word written in Kelish inscribed on its forehead. Lillia can interpret the word as Kelish for "fire."

Lillia completes casting her spell, just as the chameleon-like creature appears ready to leap down the well shaft. It sways woozily, then collapses, katana at its side clattering against the stone as the creature collapses on the rim of the well. It slides a bit, looking like the body might slip over the edge. As soon as the dozing body is at rest, its colour shifts to match the stonework.

Well done Lillia, the creature will be asleep for the next minute.

Sczarni

To move things along, I'll assume one of you manages to truss up the skulk.

After a minute or so, the hairless, skin-changing humanoid tied up before you wakes. It struggles against its bonds, and hisses in Common: "What are you going to do with me? Don't you know that I am the Fire Speaker?"

During that time, you have a scan of the room but the only item of note that you find is the jade katana that was hanging at the creature's side. It matches the description of the ceremonial blade that Amara Li was interested in. Before you can investigate any further, however, the door on the far side of the room opens, and four kobolds enter the room. Seeing you, they brandish their weapons defensively, but do not advance. In fact, seeing the creature tied up before you, they almost look relieved.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Paladin 1 HPs:7/12 Str: 14/16

Kersten speaks in a deep resonant voice, "Stop where you are little folk. Speak your business here?" He takes the time to look at the little humanoid reptiles, holding his flail ready to strike if they change their attitude.

Not sure if the kobolds understand Kernsten Latharel tries in draconic

"Emme tarkoita sinua haittaa, jos et vahingoita meitä. Kerro meille kuka tämä Tuli Speaker joka pakotti toiset hyökätä meitä."

Draconic:

"We don't mean you harm if you don't harm us. Tell us what who this Fire Speaker is who forced others to attack us."

The Exchange

The kobolds grow excited when Latharel speaks in Draconic. One of them, a bold looking female warrior, replies: "Oletko kukisti Tuli Speaker? Hän ryömi ulos hyvin ja teki patsas hengittää tulen ja puhua. Emme luota häneen, mutta patsas sanoi, että meidän täytyy totella." Then, in broken Common, she adds: "If you have defeated the Fire Speaker, then you must be great. We do not wish to fight you, if you will allow us to leave."

Draconic:
"Have you vanquished the Fire Speaker? He crawled out of the well and made the statue breathe fire and speak. We did not trust him, but the statue said we must obey."

Alas, if only I could speak Finnish. This was from Google translate, apologies if it's a bit garbled.

As you speak with the kobolds, you can see over their heads into the next room beyond the doorway. It appears to be a large room, and perhaps was once some sort of gallery. However, once-decorated walls now appear to have been replaced with Draconic graffiti, crudely etched into the walls. Other than the scrawl on the walls, the chamber is noticeably cleaner and less dusty than the dungeon's other rooms.

Liberty's Edge

Targ just turns around and awaits their response.

"I don't have any particular urge for more bloodshed," Lillia says to the others with a cheerful smile, before finishing with a shrug of indifference, "but..."

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Paladin 1 HPs:7/12 Str: 14/16

Kernsten looks with respect at Latharel, "Do you think they would help us with our way round the rest of this dangerous dungeon? They could tell us what to expect, though I'm not sure if we can rely on their answers. But they have not wronged us yet!"

Sczarni

Ranger 1 10/11 HP

Tuli Speaker ei ottelu minulle ja ystävilleni. Meidän taikuutta ja meidän terä on vahvempi kuin hänen. Hän saattaa olla valtava vihollinen sinulle - mutta olette nyt meidän suojella jos autat meitä.

Draconic:

"The Fire Speaker is no match for me and my friends. Our magic and our blade is stronger as his. He might be a formidable foe for you - but you are now under our protecting if you help us."

Towards his comrades:

"I'm sure these noble warriors will help us as we have shown to be stronger as the Speaker of Fire and have defeated him who did plague them. I'm sure they will help us in exchange for protecting them while we are here and removing the Speaker of Fire from them so he can never again harm them."

Towards the Kobolds again

"May I introduce to you - Targ the Mighty - he can be fast as an arrow and stealthy as a shadow.
Kernsten the Brave - you have seldom seen a mightier hero as him.
Lillia the Magnificent - you have seldom seen a more accomplished healer and spell singer as her.
Myself - I call Latharel the Lost - I'm the speaker of the group - a master of many tongues - including yours."

The Exchange

The female kobold warrior puffs up proudly at the words "noble warriors" and she seems impressed by the epithets Latharel uses to describe the group. She translates Latharel's words for the others, and the kobolds have a brief huddle. Then, the lead kobold addresses you again in her rough Common:

"Give you us the Fire Speaker? We," she indicates herself and her companions, "did not believe what the Fire Speaker said, but our pack-mates listened. Now we see what has become of them. We would like to deal with Fire Speaker now he is defeated. It would be great boon to us, o great warriors." She points to the skulk, now indignantly tied up. The skulk gulps.

She also adds: "We tell you about next rooms. Next room empty, our chamber. Next room has frightening well. We don't know what is in next room, two pack-mates disappeared, we do not follow. But does meet with gate to outside."

Sczarni

Ranger 1 10/11 HP

Latharel turns to his comrades - giving them a smile in the hope they understand and play along. If they only would speak all the Elven tongue - it would make it so much easier to pretend while in earshot of the Kobolds.
But as the Szarni say - act now - ask for forgiveness later.

Talking to the kobolds and especially to the female warrior

Sinun tulisi noudattaa neuvoja uuden valistuneen johtajan.

Draconic:

"You should follow the advice of your new enlightened leader. We will gladly hand over the Speaker of Fire to her - so she can decide on the right punishement for him.
I can see great glory in her as she seems wise and strong. But please excuse when I carry on in the common tongue. My comrades don't understand your tongue."

Speaking in common again:

"As the Leader of this group I have decided that we should hand over the Speaker of Fire to you - so you can punish him for what he has done to you.
We only take the sword as this belongs to the mighty warriors who have defeated them. Once we have handed over the Fire Speaker you show us through your room and towards the well. We are mighty advaneturer - not like your pack mates. We will investigate the well - and we will report back to you should we manage to destroy evil or lift a curse that seems to pester this place.
All we ask is to give us any information you have about the well."

Turning towards Targ and Lilia

"The Speaker of Fire made the Statue breath Fire. Lilia - you know Magic. targ - you are the most cunning of us. Please check if Magic or cunning is involbed and if the either of you gained the powers of the Speaker of Fire by defeating him."

He then waves everyone away from the statue to give Targ and Lilia room to investigate.

Turning back to the Kobolds

Draconic:

"Remember this day - the day when the mighty adventurers came to rid you off the Speaker of Fire and to start a new time of Glory for you and your clan.
Remember the names - Latharel, Lillia, Targ and Kernsten. Tell the story to your children - so they will become one day strong, cunning and powerful."

Sczarni

Ranger 1 10/11 HP

Latharel turns a last time to the Kobolds

"Not everything in my life always was easy. Even a mighty hero like myself gets defeated by life occasionally. So in a twist of bad luck I once had to give away my mighty bow - made by elves and unrivalled by an ordinary one like this"

and with these words he shows the short bow they retrieved from the ghoul

"So I hope that once I have freed this place that I'm a step closer to redeem the bow that once belonged to me. To do this I also seek some paper. Agreements written long ago - written in a language I might not even understand - but they are thought after by a powerful friend - even mightier then we are.
If you know anything about them or if you found some papers you don't know what to do with - I would be glad to trade them for this bow and some arrows. It isn't much I offer - but it seems the bow is small enough for warriors like you and you might be able to use it while helping me on my way to redeem myself and reclaim back what once was mine."

How is that about twisting a story and my background :) I really look forward to trade in my first 2 PA for a MW composite longbow to get my heirloom back.

"As our wise leader commands," Lillia says, bowing her head low enough that her long silvery hair falls to cover most of her amused grin.

Turning away to the statue, she carefully stows the bundles of ancient papers carried under her left arm, placing them gently into her satchel to free up both hands.

Upon completion of a few intricate gestures and obscure mutterings, the faint light from her ruined eye flares up slightly, sending a wide beam of green light to wash over the large statue, starting at the head and slowly washing down towards the ground where the bound form of the 'Fire Speaker' lies.

Detect magic towards the statue and the skulk.

The Exchange

The kobolds seem impressed by Latharel's speech. They confer and their leader speaks, in Common: "We would be honoured to be a part of your legend, great ones! Three of my warriors will remain here to watch over this pretender. We don't understand "agreements", but one of us will scour the rooms for any writings and bring them back here. And I, would be honoured to escort you to the room with the well, though I will not go in." The skulk follows the conversation nervously.

Meanwhile, Lillia casts detect magic , concentrating on the skulk and the statue.

Detect magic:

The statue holds a faint aura of evocation magic, particularly around the statue's mouth and head, where the Kelish word for "fire" is found. Even with your knowledge, the original spell cast on the statue is obscured, but you believe it evokes some sort of fire effect. The skulk's aura seems a blend of faint magic, but illusion seems strongest.
Know arcana 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Feel free if Targ wants to study the statue or if you want to roleplay the encounter further, but to move things along I'll just introduce the next section.

Once you are ready to leave this chamber, the lead kobold warrior - who informs you that her name is Tarka - escorts you into the next room. The others remain behind, poking the skulk playfully with their spears, apart from one who dashes off the way you have just come.

The next room has walls that do indeed appear to have once been decorated, but have now been disfigured by graffiti. The words are in Draconic, and most appear to be names (Tarka, Rexus, Gorgot, Lurtil are the most easily made out) once they have been translated. You also make out a few phrases such as "All hail the Fire Speaker!" and "The flame lives!" The room seems like a square chamber, with the door that you have just come through in the north-west corner and a pair of doors across in the south-east corner.

As you approach the doors in the south-east, you begin to hear a strange howling sound coming from the other side of the doors. Tarka leads you to the doors, then is quick to retreat, informing you that you are on your own.

The Exchange

You open the door, to find that the mournful howl comes from a stone well in the room's centre.
