Back in the hobby, trying to get Kingmaker book 1(print) Impossible?

Kingmaker

After years away from the hobby(I stopped playing AD&D when it was the 2nd edition) I am finally getting back into some tabletop RPG, found Pathfinder to my liking and got a group together. Based on various thread here I decided to start with Kingmaker, but I simply can't find book 1 at a reasonable price. FLGS can't order it, it's OOP on Paizo website and let's not talk about amazon or ebay where it reach 200$... Why are all the other books in the series readily available, but not the first volume?(I have ordered all through my FLGS without any problem) Yes I can get the pdf, (and will be probably forced to do so) but I hate PDF(even though I work in IT and work daily with them). I'm old school, I like to have the adventure open in front of me, easilly flipping the pages, reading and preparing the adventure in the comfort of our la-z-boy :P (plus, I hate the laptop "widescreen" display now, you can barely fit 30 lines of text on those screen.)

Is it available on some online store at a more regular price or should I simply bit it and run book 1 using the PDF? (already cringing thinking about it)

Thanks!

Honestly? Print or not, Kingmaker's map exploration mechanic makes running the campaign without the PDFs considerably more of a challenge. With the PDF and a proper reader, you can extract the map file without the icons, print them out, and do all sorts of things to hide the content of hexes. It's also trivial to make handouts (even multiple copies) and with the way Paizo adventures are constructed you'll need at least a Bestiary open at all times, so having one or the other on a nearby screen standing vertical is an invaluable way to save space.

That said, Kingmaker 1 was extraordinarily popular since it was the first volume of the first AP printed after the conversion to Pathfinder from 3.5 (Council of Thieves premiered with it, but it wasn't until Kingmaker that it was known to be popular.) So the fact that it's sold out doesn't come as any real surprise. Unfortunately, Paizo doesn't do reprints of adventures very often, so you're likely SOL - this one may be headed for collector's status. I'd suggest googling about a bit, see what you can find.

Not having book 1, I didn't know about that part yet :P But it's a good point. Thanks for the answer and reason on why it seems so rare now.

I'll buy and then print the pdf in b&w anyway for easier reading. It would have been nice to have the real binded book but one thing I can't complain, is that paizo at least put PDF out of everything. A nice change from the industry back in the 90's.

If you're desperate enough to pay $40 for it, Noble Knight Games has it here at that price.

I'm the opposite; ever since I got an iPad, I've been buying fewer and fewer paper books. If you'd like to buy my (used, obv) Kingmaker books (I've got the complete AP) I'll sell them for $10 each, plus shipping (I'm in Ontario, Canada).

Send me a private message if you're interested. I'd like to see the books go to a good home.

$200 on eBay? I'll gladly sell you mine for $100.

(OK, that was sarcasm, thinking the OP was exaggerating, but checking Amazon, he's right. A couple folks selling it for $250, a bunch of folks selling it for $900. I've got to think that's a scam, sellers hoping that somebody accidentally purchases.)

If your deal with uriel222 falls through you always have the option of buying the PDFs and then just printing off a copy of each at Kinkos or Staples or something.

You may print one copy of any Paizo PDF for personal use. Note that this only applies to products that list Paizo Publishing as the copyright holder—other publishers may have different policies; you'll need to contact them directly.

That's a fallback plan indeed, still costly though(Staples charge 39 cents per color pages here in Canada, that's 39$ to print the PDF). Although I would only need book 1, the others are available at normal prices in print form.

DMFTodd: That's crazy, right? Not a single one priced reasonably. Ebay is just as bad.

The eBay and Amazon prices you are seeing are due to automated listing programs. An interesting article on this concept can be found here:

A $23million text book?

On the KM1 subject: we still have several copies of the book in our store, and I can still track them down from a few of the lesser known distributors, so they're out there for regular price. No need to be at the mercy of the listing bots. Of course, you can also contact the sellers directly and they will likely override their programs.

Yeah it can be pricey, I did the three 'Faiths of' books compiled into one bound book through staples with cover covers for each book on card stock and it only came to about $15CAD, inside pages were black and white but it turned out very nicely.

The Exchange

Another thing to remember is you don't have to print the entire pdf to run the adventure. The actual adventure is only about 50 pages or so, with the rest being fiction, bestiary, notes about the background, and other awesome stuff.

Sczarni

What Zandari said. I've done that for three chapters of Carrion Crown, and it's been quite affordable.

And you don't necessarily have to do color, either. Maybe print a few color pages for maps or pictures that you particularly like, but the rest can be black and white to save money.

so... i can make money off my AP books is that what you re telling me?

I just picked up one of the Kingmaker #1 Scratch n' Dent copies last month. I'd be darned if I can tell you exactly what was wrong with the copy; it looks that close to mint condition (I'm sure there's some minor ding or something somewhere I haven't noticed.)

Kingmaker #2 is going to be the hard one to get.

Just keep an eye on actual ebay auctions, and not ridiculous robo-priced 'buy it now' options.

Got the whole series from Uriel(great dealing with him, fast shipping for sure!) I returned books 2 to 6 to the local store(he didn't mind, unlike D&D books, Pathfinder books are fully returnable to his supplier) Happy camper here and eager to get back into DMing after many years off :)

Glad you got that worked out.

Welcome to Kingmaker =) Lots of good advice, tips, suggestions, alterations, and company on this forum here for you.

Big thanks to Cthulhudrew for reminding me about the scratch N dents. I went into a brief moment of obsessive panic when I thought I wouldn't be able to continue working on my complete adventure path collection. Placed the order now for 1-3.

Buy the PDF and have it printed and bound at Kinko's or someplace like that. I've had my Skull & Shackles paper miniatures printed off there and the quality is great.

I'm with you. It might not be as fast to find things digitally but it's great to have so many books with you at a given moment.

And reading in the dark :)
Girlfriend asleep? No problem :)
