Smell / Scent Check

Rules Questions

Hmmm, I can't find anything listed in the rules for a character smelling something? I know the rules if you have the special ability of scent, but this question arrives for PCs like human, gnome, elves, dwarves, etc WITHOUT the scent special ability.

My PCs will be coming into a cavern with a pile of rotting dead orcs in the far hidden natural cave alcove. I think it's reasonable that each person would get a "smell check" and perception check before realizing the awful smell some 30-40' away?

Are there any rules for smelling (again I know the rules if you have scent)?

Perception

Your senses allow you to notice fine details and alert you to danger. Perception covers all five senses, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.

Something that obvious, don't make a roll, just describe it. I would use a roll for something more interesting, like if the smell is covering up another smell that is an important piece of information (like some other worse smelling monster waiting in ambush, or some other clue).

Irontruth,

You've made your perception check! There's a nest of dire rats in the rotting flesh of five 3 month old dead orcs (they inhabited the cave after running off two cave bears). However, the cave bear killed 5 of the orcs, but now the cave is now inhabited by Goblins due to the orcs moving onto another location.
