Order won't go through but my card was charged. Twice.

Customer Service

I placed an order for two copies of the Swords and Wizardry Complete print edition. I used a Mastercard gift card ($100 - Santa was good to me) which had been registered online. The card was declined. I thought, well maybe I screwed up the numbers. I tried again. Declined again. This time it said "insufficient funds". I checked on the registration website and my card has been charged twice, $47.34 each time, and now has $5.32 left on it. $47.34 was the cost of two S&W Complete books with shipping. The merchant on the registration website for both purchases is listed as "PAIZO.COM". No confirmation e-mail from Paizo. Nothing under pending orders. Nothing but an nearly empty gift card. More than a little annoying. I had planned on picking up the S&W copies from you and going to Amazon for an item you don't carry (The Adventurer Conqueror King hardback print edition). Right now, I don't have my S&W ordered, don't have a card with money to make my Amazon order and am out $94.68. I have never had this type of an issue with gift cards on Paizo. I'd appreciate it if something could be done about this. I don't believe the card is reloadable, but it would be nice to get my S&W copies and maybe store credit for the second pair (I only need 2 copies - one for me and one for my brother).

Thank you.

See the FAQ those are most likely authorizations, and will fall off as soon as mastercard lets authorizations fall off. My guess is that the billing address of the card and of your account are different. so when the authorization came back with 'approved as long as they say they are from address XXX' and your account says YYY is your billing address it fails... I've seen that happen to a bunch of people in the past few months since the authorization system got an upgrade

They call that an upgrade? If it makes gift cards unusable I'd call it a downgrade...

The Captain is correct that the activity you saw on the card were authorizations. The transactions were declined by our system, rather than your bank, due to a problem with the billing address. You may need to contact the issuer of the gift card to determine what the proper billing address should be.

I have put through an authorization reversal request on the declined transactions, so this will hopefully release the hold that the bank put on the funds. However, each issuing bank has its own rules that determine whether an authorization reversal succeeds or whether the hold is released, so you may need to contact the issuer if the holds are still on there.

I understand that this is an inconvenience for you, and I do apologize. However, we consider the added protection against credit card fraud that these additional security measures bring, for us and for customers, to be a definite upgrade. :)

Thanks,
cos

Thanks for letting me know. So, I need to find out the proper billing address for any gift cards I use at Paizo? I'll probably end up finding another use for the several types of gift cards I recieved and just use my regular credit card at Paizo. Annoying, but not a real problem. I suspect you will see a decline in sales for those peopole who don't have regular credit cards (or who don't like using them online) and rely on gift cards for purchases though... anyway, thanks for the quick response :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just to let you know, I put my order through on another card. Thank you for the help and Paizo remains my favorite online store for RPG material. In no small part because of the excellent customer service.
