The average damage you'd expect given these conditions

Hey all, I'm doing some product research. Part of this is to figure out some good values for average damage at levels 3, 9, and 16.

The restrictions are as follows:
Core and APG only.
Not greatly optimized.
Non Two-handed melee weapons.
Don't just read off the Monster Creation guidelines. I'm already aware of those :)

I have my own ideas for the average damage, but I'm curious about other opinions.

Silver Crusade

I apologize, but I find your request a bit vague. Are you wanting to figure out the average damage a monster should take at the given levels from a party, the average damage a character would likely produce at the given levels, or the average damage a monster would deal if it were an appropriate challenge for an APL of the given levels?

Good point, I was in a rush to type that up.

I'm wondering about what a player could do in a somewhat-optimized build that isn't using two-handed weapons.

I'm looking for a baseline average damage at those levels so I can compare aspects of the product I'm working on to those numbers in different situations.

For example, my first stab at such numbers used a level 9 Oracle of battle that used a mace and shield, as well as power attack. The numbers I got were both when buffed and not buffed, and I used these numbers to compare against the average HP of an equivalent CR to figure out how fast a creature at that CR would die.

It's sort of like the DPR Olympics, but two or three tiers of power lower.

Better define "buffed".

Are you including 1 hour/lvl spells like GMW in normal not buffed? And buffed - Does this include 10/min lvls spells, or just a single spell (so the battle oracle has time to cast his favored buff spell, but not all of them...

15 point buy?

And non-twohanded weapons - I would like them to compare - but that just me.

Might as well have something to compare with.

And format?

+3/+3 (1d6+5 +3 PA) = 11,5 dam pr hit

or +3/+3 (1d6+5 +3 PA) = 23 dam pr round+
Or?

Assume normal combat situation as you'd fight it. 20 point buy seems reasonable for this. If you have buffs up, list them. Only assume buffs you can give yourself though.

Not super-optimized 3rd level party:

Brutus beast totem half-orc barbarian (Str 18, toothy alternate racial trait from APG, Power Attack, some non-attack-or-damage increasing feat, could not afford +1 amulet of mighty fists yet): bite +6 (1d4+6) normally and 2 claws +8 (1d6+8) and bite +8 (1d4+8) while raging.

Cassius sword-and-shield cavalier or paladin (Str 18, Power Attack, Weapon Focus, +1 weapon): longsword +8 (1d8+7, 19-20/x2), becomes +9 (1d8+10, 19-20/x2) against target of smite evil/challenge (assuming Paladin with Cha 13 or mounted Cavalier of the Sword).

Twinky summoner with his bipedal Eidolon (Str 19, Power Attack, Improved Natural Attack-bite; evolutions: ability increase-Str, bite [x2 to add 1-1/2 Str bonus], increase damage-claws): 2 claws +6 (1d6+6) and bite +6 (1d8+8). This jumps to 2 claws +6 (1d8+7) and bite +6 (2d6+9) when buffed with enlarge person, given time.

Spark Sparksson scorching ray focusing gnome evoker (Dex 18, Int 14, gifted adept, Spell Specialization, Pyromaniac alternate racial trait from APG): scorching ray +6 ranged touch (4d6+1) and scorching ray +6 ranged touch (4d6) thrice per day; burning hands (3d4+1, DC 14 Reflex for half) four times per day (he's pyromaniac after all, he casts utility from scrolls).

Server ate my calculations. Baseline CR 3 AC of 15 assumed. Power Attack all the time.

About 24,61 DPR on full attack while raging.

About 8,85 or 11,96 against target of smite/challenge.

About 19,84, or 24,57 when enlarged.

Assuming touch AC of 12.

Scorching ray: 22,83

For comparison Angrius Gladius, a barbarian (Str 18, Power Attack, either Weapon Focus or Furious Focus, a rage power that does not directly increase hit or damage, +1 weapon) wields a greatsword with +10 total attack bonus dealing 2d6+13 damage for an average DPR of 17,6 (while raging) or 13,09 when not raging.

His less angry and more focused brother Gladius Duomanus, a fighter (Str 18, Power Attack, Weapon Focus and Furious Focus, +1 weapon) wields a greatsword with +9 total attack bonus dealing 2d6+10 damage for an average DPR of 14,02 all the day and has a feat to spare on maneuvers or non-combat benefits.

Morphy Defsistah' would be a witch with Str 14, Int 20, Cha 8, slumber hex, Ability Focus (slumber), Power Attack, killer trait and one +1 heavy pick wielded in two hands to get the best of Strength bonus (I'd go with scythe if two-handed weapons weren't forbidden).

DPR (assuming weak Will save of +2): 12,75 plus chance of instant kill due to coup d'grace.
DPR (assuming strong Will save of +6): 9,35 plus chance of instant kill due to coup d'grace.

DPR increases greatly in this case when given a chance to buff oneself with enlarge person and (with Strength patron) bull's strength and divine favor.

Opponents immune to sleep and/or mind-affecting effects cause this character's DPR fall to ground with rather pathetic whine.

Duh. I haven't calculated Power Attack bonus for Morphy.

Against weak Will save DPR is 17,25 and against strong save it is 12,65.

Thanks. I'll be processing this later!

Spoiler:
Before anyone asks, I used European notation where "," is used to separate decimals. I'll try to stick to "." from now on.

Sunikutsu Bakustabishu, an oriental halfling rogue with Str 10, Dex 20, Two-weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Training rogue talent and two masterwork short swords and flanking will make 2 short sword attacks at +10 dealing 1d4 points of damage plus 2d6 sneak attack damage per hit for a total DPR of 15.6.

Thousand-feathered Arrows Slinger, a zen archer Monk with Str 16, Wis 16, Deadly Aim, Point-blank Shot, Weapon Focus, +1 mighty composite longbow has lots of options and calculations:

single shot without Deadly Aim or Point-blank shot: +7 (1d8+4) - 6.07 DPR
single shot with Deadly Aim: +6 (1d8+6) - 6.93 DPR
single shot with Point-blank Shot: +8 (1d8+5) - 7.13 DPR
single shot with Deadly Aim and Point-blank Shot: +7 (1d8+7) - 8.22

flurry: +6/+6 (1d8+4) - 11.22 DPR
flurry with Deadly Aim: +5/+5 (1d8+6) - 12.7 DPR
flurry with Point-blank Shot: +7/+7 (1d8+5) - 13.58 DPR
flurry with Deadly Aim and Point-blank Shot: +6/+6 (1d8+7) - 15.18 DPR.

K-Boomb, a half-orc mad genius bomb alchemist with Dex 14, Int 20, Point-blank Shot, Weapon Focus and half-orc alchemist favored class bonus attacks with a bomb at +6 ranged touch causing a 1d6+7 plus 1d6 points of fire damage (assuming 20 feet or less of distance).

Again, assumed touch AC of 12.

DPR against single target: 10.89
Splash damage probably increase DPR by average of 5.56 per affected creature with poor (+2) Reflex save or 4.89 per affected creature with good (+6) Reflex save, not including evasion or resistance, but I calculated it mostly instinctively and assuming that no creature will be in splash radius on a missed attack.

Sorcerer or Wizard using a forbidden feat (either Varisian Tattoo or Bloat Mage Initiate) together with gifted adept and Spell Specialization to boost own CL with magic missile to seventh level can deal an average of 14 points of force damage (15 in case of Evoker).

Without resorting to illegal feats decent magic missile build can deal 10.5 DPR (11.5 for Evoker) at third level. Wizards can boost it with flaming sphere by additional 7.87 against opponents with poor (+2) Reflex save or by 5.77 against opponents with good (+6) Reflex save. Again evasion and resistances not included.

EDIT: 3rd level wizard with magical lineage and Empower Spell can increase his magic missile DPR to 15.75 (15.75 for Evoker).

Bhu'rne, a red dragon-blooded sorcerer half-orc (Cha 18, Spell Focus and Spell Specialization) can burn his enemies with burning hands for 5d4+6 fire damage or half on a successful Reflex save (DC 16). That would be – if I am calculating correctly – 15.26 DPR for poor save opponents and 14.33 DPR against good save opponents. I think so, at least...

Scarlet Jill, a human weapon master fighter with Str 14, Dex 18, Point-blank Shot, Weapon Focus, Rapid Shot, Deadly Aim, weapon training 1 as well as +1 mighty longbow can do the following routine:

single shot +10 (1d8+4) - 7,48 DPR
PBS +11 (1d8+5) - 8,88 DPR
Deadly Aim +9 (1d8+6) - 8,66 DPR
PBS + Deadly Aim +10 (1d8+7) - 10.12 DPR
rapid shot +8/+8 (1d8+4) - 13.09 DPR
rapid shot + PBS +9/+9 (1d8+5) - 15.67 DPR
rapid shot + Deadly Aim +7/+7 (1d8+6) - 15.01 DPR
rapid shot + PBS + Deadly Aim +8/+8 (1d8+7) - 17.71 DPR

For comparison with Thousand-feathered Arrow Slinger.
