Considering splitting my party

Rise of the Runelords

So I've got a party that's grown to over 12 PCs and I'm considering how best to manage it. We've been playing Rise of the Runelords off and on since it first released (I kept getting interrupted by life), and I just picked back up where we left off now that the Anniversary Edition is out.

Problem is, it's a fairly popular AP, and everyone I know wants to get in on my campaign. I guess that's a good sign.

But seriously. 12 people.

So, I have one guy who is willing to help me divide the party in half. He'll take one half, I'll take the other, and we can co-GM.

Question:
How well does RotRL lend itself to two parties wandering through the campaign simultaneously?

I would suspect that it would be disappointing to arrive at Fort Rannick and discover that the Kreegs were all dead, the loot was all plundered, etc.

Do I just run them as separate groups entirely?

Any thoughts?

I had a hard enough time scaling it up for 6 PCs.

Honestly, I'd recommend splitting the group and running them in parallel versions of the campaign world. It might be fun to see how they diverge.

If you want them to be running around simultaneously and occasionally interact, I think you'll need to write a whole parallel AP and send one group on that path while the other runs through the published one. Not that I'd recommend it: that would be a TON of work.

You could have Curse of the Crimson throne running at the same time. Have one group in that one and the other that way the can interact as they are not too far from each other.

The other thing you could do is find all the modules and Pathfinder Society adventures set in Varisia and weave the parts of RotRL plot into those.

You could do something similar with Jade Regent or Second Darkness.

They're all APs beginning in Varisia which don't interrupt/change each other.

How far are you into RotRL?

We're about to complete Hook Mountain Massacre.

I think I'm leaning towards keeping it as one big group. It's large, and kind of a pain... But everyone seems to be having a good time, and that's what it's all about, right?

Thanks for the ideas though.

What about running it like an actual Mercenary company?

Styling it after a special forces Alpha and Bravo team.

Leaders hand pick members (and trade them back and forth) based on the needs of a mission.
A leader can either be the Alpha (the usual leader) or the One-zero , a subject matter expert.

Either way, the assault group (the one going on the mission) is picked from who is best for what they expect, giving you a constant roster of team members to pick from. Meanwhile the others back in camp or in town, are running other things, crafting items, and/or other non-essential to this specific mission, things. Also research, side questing, role playing with NPC's in town, or just waiting in the wings incase they are called or needed.

Think about it like this, what if the A team got in trouble, or even all killed on a mission, the others could stop what they were doing and go in and bail them out, raising, whatever. No need for dumb DM fiat etc.

Simple things like teleport, word of recall, messenger etc really become useful now, switching out members, and if someone isnt around to play that session, they get switched out for a B-team member that session.

Back up DM is handling all the non spot light things, and running side quests and off the cuff stuff.

We've had very inconsistent attendance over the course of running the campaign (dang real life!), so we'll have some sessions with as many as 8-9 players, others with only 2-3. At least you've hopefully got the same players showing up each session!

After Hook Mountain, a lot of the encounters would work with a large group broken up into 'squads' - for example, the Sandpoint Fight at the start of Book 4 could have one squad at the north/upper end of town, while another is at the south side, with a seperate GM running each. Just roughly double the waves of attackers (maybe throw in a homemade singular threat to parallel the dragon), and it would probably be pretty similar. Given a large table/map, or even two seperate tables running at the same location, this could make for a pretty epic defense.

Similarly, the assault on Jorgenfist, Runeforge, and even Xin-Shalast seem like they would work this way - the group decides that the heavy hitters of Alpha Squad makes a frontal assault (run by GM 1), while Beta Squad, with all the sneaky guys, uses the distraction to go for the unguarded rear entrance...
