Take cover! (how to run a shoot-out).

Ok.

So, I'm about to start leading a wild west style campaign using all the advanced firearm rules from Ultimate Combat.

Obviously, this is going to change the way combat works in a major way. Namely, instead of everyone rushing towards each other to fight.. they are all going to run away from each other and find cover to shoot from.

So I want to be clear on the cover rules, specifically firing from cover.

If character A has cover from character B (she's hiding behind a tree), she has to leave cover (by moving) in order to attack with a ranged weapon.. correct? There is no 'leaning out to shoot then ducking back" option beyond, say: 5ft step out, shoot (standard) and return (move).

I know about sniping, but it's not the same thing since no one is trying to hide from anyone.. everyone knows character A is behind that tree.

Also, if you were one of my players.. would you be looking for ways in which to 'shoot from cover'? I want to be as prepared as I can because I know the questions are going to come in fast and furious once I ask for an initiative roll.

Thanks!

You can't 5-foot step and then move again.

IIRC: You can lean out to shoot BUT you only receive partial cover til your next turn.

The Shot on the Run Feat (I believe that is the name) is going to be major. As will a Two-Weapon Warrior Fighter.

Move 15 feet. Fire 2 shots. Finish moving into Cover. Run and Gun!

If I can when I get to my computer I might edit this post to include links.

I'm interested in this because I had the idea to run a Wild West campaign too. Kinda like a "Magnificent 7" type campaign where everyone is a Gestalt Gunslinger/Something or just everyone has the Amateur Gunslinger Feat. Maybe building off of Kingmaker just because.

Gunslingers will dominate. If a gunslinger is near cover and has grit points, he can only be shot at once per turn by anyone at a -4 penalty. After which he moves 5 feet as an immediate action or drops prone, which means enemies don't have line of effect on him any more.

..that'll teach me to post late at night. Duh!

the other thing I realized is that.. you don't have to leave cover to shoot at someone.. but of course, your cover now becomes their cover.

..I am most interested in where this comes from. Even if it is a house rule.. I'll probably adopt it!

I think it is a houserule my group created by Accident... Strangely during a Weird War II campaign I believe... We used the Low Obstacles & Cover rules.

But Shot On The Run. Excellent Feat.

As are Snap Shop and Improved Snap Shot.

@Rynjin: I am probably going to steal that Idea for a Wild West Frontier Campaign I am planning. Might even run it as a PbP if I can get my hands on Ultimate Campaign when it comes out.

Shot on the run is actually pretty crappy for normal pathfinder, but might actually be usable here

Shot On The Run on a Scout Sniper Rogue. Feat intensive but pretty brutal in a Wooded or similar Area. Say a Temple filled with columns for cover.

Another couple options are mounted archery. You can make a full-attack from a moving mount at no penalty, so long as your mount only takes a single move (if I recall a few mounts move 50' or so).

Presuming you fire at the mid-point you can have mount move from cover. Fire. Return to cover.

Don't forget about firing from prone. Guns and crossbows can be used at no penalty from prone and you get an extra 4 AC v. Ranged attacks.

You can't Move & Shoot then Move again even on a Mount.

And you still take the penalties if you want the mount to move a second time.
