Looking forward to illustrated moar WF articles!

And submission sent, regarding geologic perils and hazards for the overlooked upper reaches of the Darklands known as Nar-Voth. All at a neat, compact 749 words.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Looks like I have 25 submissions received thus far! KEEP THEM COMING IN!

Anyone else doing something on fleshcrafting?

Sovereign Court

now that you mention it ... no. But I would be interested in seeing what you come up with. :)

Challenge accepted. :)

Kinda. I've submitted a monster revolving around that concept (desperately need feedback on that one, Tim!) and I'm working on some more stuff more directly to do with using special ingredient X to achieve abberration-like-looking-effect Y.

Ruyan.

Well, doesn't sound like the idea I've got forming, so I think we're okay...though doing a fleshcrafted aberration for the Bestiary sounds fun.

Darklands Scout, new archetype - just emailed about 10 seconds ago.

Ok, I'm working on it. It will be a short fiction with the description of a new god (and maybe a new mongrelmen spell) as a sidebar. Maybe in a few more days. Have faith!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

So, a request (or suggestion) of sorts has come to my attention.

The call has come to see if Wayfinder can produce "a couple of short Beginner Box-compatible adventures set near Sandpoint for people to use as follow-ups to the starter adventure".

Now, I'm all for this. However, for issue #9, I'd STILL like to see them sticking to the theme of the Darklands, though. Surely, there have to be some passageways around Sandpoint leading to the Darklands that can be tied into those initial adventures in the Beginner Box (or the BB demos).

These would likely need to be around 3000 to 4500 words (so, 4-6 pages), much like we've done for the side trek adventures. I'm looking for those of you that have some experience with actually writing adventures, be they PFS scenarios, or modules (Paizo or 3PP), or if you are a RPG Superstar semi-finalist. Due to cost of printing, I can't stick very many in one issue...likely only 1 or 2. However, we CAN make them PDF extras.

So...consider this a new challenge. Come up with your BB mini-adventure concept, and send in a summary to Wayfinder (wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com), along with info about yourself and what you've written, adventure-wise.

Been awhile but I'm looking forward once again doing art for Wayfinder.

Why am I asking for previous experience in writing adventurer when, after all, we are just a fanzine?

Well, if you have written a published adventure before, you know the drill. By asking for previous experience, we are sort of vetting the writers out. As a volunteer fanzine, we don't have the months to develop these. We have WEEKS. So, the more polished the turnover, the better. We can't have a turnover that needs lots of editing and rewrites...we don't have the time. And those who know the drill are going to likely turn over something that will be in good shape. Which makes it easier on us, and allows us to get the zine done in time.

Now, I will fully admit that there are some of you out there that can write such an adventure for us, and do a damned good job of it (the Chopper's Isle side-trek adventure in #7 is a GREAT example). If you think you can do that, then GREAT, please send me your proposal. But, I also need to know you, and know that you can write it in a month, complete with rough map. And that you can you hit the word count target as well.

A horrible reason why I don't design adventures...:
There are these goblins and, like um, a long time ago some evil dwarves pushed them out of their womb-like caves deep under the earth. Now a bunch of evil humans have begun persecuting the goblin tribes. The goblins have rediscovered their underground homes and have begun moving back into them. In turn they displaced a whole lot of vermin, like 3 encounters worth, that made their way to the surface and attacked a small town. A group of villainous adventurers have decided to try and rid the caves of the goblins, they must defeat the guards at the tunnels entrance and the goblin king's bodyguard. Rather than kill the goblin king (who in no way looks like David Bowie), they must convince him to move the tribe to another area. If they are able to convince him, he first asks the greedy, treasure hungry adventures to clear out a mysterious workshop that was submerged under the earth during some great disaster. The workshop is full of strange devices that prevent the goblin people from furthering their journey under the earth.

Awesome idea. It's one I've wondered about a few times in the past, because it seems like there isn't a lot of support for PFBB right now. The kids that I play with instantly wanted to graduate to regular Pathfinder the moment we finished off a PFBB version of We Be Goblins, but I'd love to have other scenarios for the kids I teach roleplaying to at my son's school. And, actually, I'm running a PFBB game for a 9 year old's birthday party at Greenlake Games tomorrow afternoon.

Another thing that would be useful would be if one of the artists could include a page or two of pawn art (if there are new creatures in the scenarios)...

So, to recap....

Beginner Box mini-adventure.

3000 to 4500 words (4 -6 pages)

Tie in the Sandpoint area, with Darkland-themed content as well

Send a summary proposal to Wayfinder, and we will/can tell you what we think, and suggest modifications.

Or...you can just submit something to us, and if it works, with minor modifications, we might use it.

Double submission sent! Make me know!^^

Honestly, I get this question every issue.

EVERYTHING. We need want you want to write.

I need Weal or Woe articles. (I'm surprised...I have none right now!)

I need monsters for the bestiary.

I need gazetteer articles about fantastic places in the Darklands.

I need magic items, spells.

I need archetypes, prestige classes, bloodlines, and class options.

I need people to pitch me ideas on Beginner Box mini-adventures that tie Sandpoint and some aspect of the Darklands together.

I've got 25 submissions right now. That's about half of what we use in an issue. I'd LIKE 60 by March 31, so we have a healthy selection to choose from.

If you've got an idea, but aren't sure that it's a good one, I'm happy to give some early feedback. I'm not going to tell you what to write for us, but I will let you know what I think, and suggest possible changes that may help the submission.

Woooot? Why did I constrain myself from writing another one... Hm, maybe I can divert some (more) time from my actual chores...

Working on a weal or woe now...
Also have a monster submission that if I have time I'll also be sending (needs a littel work in the crunch)

One submission sent. May work up a second one if I have time.

Tim, I've emailed my Beginner Box-based sidetrek proposal, with the subject line "Wayfinder #9 Beginner Box Adventure Proposal". Cheers.

I'm going to be cutting it quite close to the deadline (it's finals week here so I can't really sit down and do some hardcore writing until Thursday) but I plan to submit an entry on the Duergar, whom I believe to be rather uncharacterized compared to the Derro or Drow, and an accompanying combat encounter.

5 places that won't kill you to visit (working title) is almost finished.

Also, if my wife can find time, we are doing a joint submission with two recipes. A brain meatloaf and eggs in purgatory are on the menu.

Got a heroes hoard idea as well.

ONLY 10 DAYS LEFT!

Yes, only 10 days left until the Call for Submissions for Wayfinder #9 concludes! This issue's theme is the Darklands...that underworld network of caves and evil depths, home to the drow, and deeper evils. We are still in need of submitted material, so if you've got a monster, a magic item, a new class or archetype, feats, spells, details on a place or city, an organization, some NPCs for a Weal or Woe article...send them in!

Also, we've been asked to see if the fans want to write up Beginner Box mini-adventures for the Sandpoint area. If you are interested in that, pitch us your idea. If it sounds good to us, we'll set you on an assignment to write it up.

Also, we should take the time to announce that Paris Crenshaw, author and editor in several of our past Wayfinder issues, has agreed to take on the duties of Assistant Editor-in-Chief! Paris and Tim will, together, take on the editorial tasks for #9.

AND, due to all the positive feedback on the ART in Wayfinder #8, Tim will continue to serve as Art Director for Wayfinder #9....apparently he has been doing something right there. ;-) (although Paris may be assisting in the cat herding of the artists).

Lastly, we are still assembling the team of editors and our roster list of artists for #9.

SO if you are interested in reviewing, editing, and tweaking articles (which range from fiction pieces to game mechanics to descriptive pieces on the world of Golarion) and have a good operating knowledge of Pathfinder game material, then throw your hat in the ring. Editors typically get 5 articles to edit, and 7-10 days to do that 1st round. A second round follows, and additional assignments are typical.

And we are ALWAYS looking for new artists that are available and willing to donate their talents to illustrating the article content for the issue. If you would like to show off your art skillz to a larger audience of Pathfinder fans, 3PPs, and Paizo itself, let us know. Send us a link to your gallery!

We will be reviewing all the submissions as they come in. Final review and selection during the first week of April. Articles selected then are assigned to editors. Editors may contact you to discuss and give feedback (they are encouraged to do so). But, they may not. Depends on the editor.

I'm happy to do some editing, Tim, if you're interested. I'm a newspaper copy editor by trade and gamer since third grade, so I think/hope I should be pretty good at it. : )

(And, OK, this may be a dumb question but submissions should NOT have BBC code, correct? I'm used to posting anything I've created on this site and it just suddenly occurred to me that BBC codes are probably less than helpful for you.)

I'd love to pitch in again on editing and especially design/layout as with WF8. I'll also have a Weal/Woe in by the end of this weekend. (House acquired!)

Sovereign Court

motteditor, correct, no BCC code. Just regular text (.doc or .docx format).

Garrett, yes, I'll get up with you to coordinate on that front soon.

It all comes down to the word count...are you near 750 or 1500 words?

That said, we usually end up rolling multiple submissions together for the Heroes' Hoard article.

So, my advice is to send them all in....but you might want to load your stronger pieces towards the front of the article. Lead strong.

will do

Needed to marinate a little I'd say that's 4 out of 5 cool items and 1 functional just not sexy item. Hero's hoard submission sent. The Weal or Woe got a lot better last night should have it polished and pretty within next few days, ceratinly before the deadline. I have a new spell too but as with my monster its not a 750 word long spell, it'd be good with a grouping of entries not a stand alone per se.

Submission sent

Both submissions in as of a couple days ago.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

One thing this morning, as we wade through the submissions:

Put your name on your submission. As in "at the top of the Word document, in a By YOUR NAME line." It's a little thing, but really keeps the "who wrote this?" questions to a minimum.

Your document gets separated from your email rather quickly, so putting your name IN your submission itself is a good idea.

Looking forward to illustrating something for this extra dark issue.

I have plans for four monster submission (unless I get more ideas or fail to create decent representation for those I have ideas for currently). I think about a spellbook with a few spells but I don't know if I'll write anything worth sending.

Weal and Woe submission sent in! By the way, is there a way to obtain a physical copy of #9, since it's the one that's gonna release at PaizoCon? (I'm overseas in Europe.)

Three ways:

1) Everyone published in the issue gets a copy. (Usually arrangements can be made to have your copy shipped with your next Paizo order, to save on shipping.)
2) Attend Paizocon; every attendee gets a copy.
3) Donate to Wayfinder. Each donor (don't recall the minimum donation, you'll have to ask Tim) gets a copy.

Hey Tim, as I'm currently managing my own ambitions, it's looking like I'm going to be writing a gazetteer article on interesting places in the duergar capital of Hagegraf, and an accompanying side treks encounter set in a mechanized forge based off the timing of the Akrizoth Horologe.

Was there an established format for gazetteer articles set by previous issues?

Is it the intent that any such adventures utilize only the pawns and statblocks, that a GM would find in the Beginners Box?

Or do they expect/allow us to expand on those basic tools?

Not entirely. Gazetteer articles turned out to be those fluff/flavor articles that dealt exclusively with describing a location. Issue #8 was the first time we decided to turn those articles into "Gazetteer" articles.

That said, there are two "formats" that can be followed, as evident in #8. One is a series of short descriptions on a variety of places. The OTHER is a more detailed accounting of town, complete with history, relations and trade, places of interest, encounters, and a town stat block. (See #8's Halfen for a well detailed example, and Caller's Rise for an approach that uses more flavor text).

Word count limits are 750 words or 1500 words.
