Tracking in the Wilderness

Advice

Im running Crown of the Kobold King and they just entered the forest tracking some kobold tracks. My question is twofold.

Possible CotKK spoiler:
1) If im doing it right the track DC should be 15(firm ground) - 4 (my guess is roughly 12 kobolds) + 1(Small) +3 (3 days since they moved) +6 (overcast for thick forrest maybe?) for a total of DC21. How often do they roll this? If they nail it once is it assumed they follow the kobolds all the way?

2) How long should it take to travel? 2 miles an hour walking but the map didnt have a good scale or i dont remember seeing one?

Thanks.

Check once per mile or more often.

To find tracks or to follow them for 1 mile requires a successful Survival check. You must make another Survival check every time the tracks become difficult to follow.

Move at half speed.

You move at half your normal speed while following tracks (or at your normal speed with a –5 penalty on the check, or at up to twice your normal speed with a –20 penalty on the check).

Yes, this makes it really hard. It's easy to flub a check at lower levels, and you have to make them often.

Geez. I have 2 rangers and a druid who all took survival and one of the rangers has Kobolds as a hated enemy so that will help.

Every mile? Thats 36 miles from Elaras to Droskars. Thats 2+ days of travel. DC 21 on first day dc 22 on second day, 16 times. Uggh they are totally gonna fudge it since they are only level 1.

Silver Crusade

Remember, even if the tracks are "lost", the tracker can still try again after an hour to pick them back up, meaning they should be able to follow the kobolds, so maybe not as quickly as they'd like.

Shadow Lodge

Also, your DC is off. The +6 modifier is for an "Overcast or moonless night" - conditions with no natural light, not just a cloudy day. Unless it's an extremely thick forest there probably shouldn't be any visibility penalty, and certainly not more than +3 (moonlight or fog).

Your track DCs should be 16 on day 1 and 17 on day 2, or DCs 19 and 20 if they decide to track by moonlight.

well it is really thick according to the descriptions but yeah its no more than +3 ill adjust accordingly.
