Pitborn Tiefling Paladin help?

Advice

Dark Archive

I'm wanting to play a tiefling paladin in an upcoming game, and need help building the character. We're starting at 10th level, and the only things I've settled on for the character are wanting him to be a "castigator" build, aka two-handed weapon wielder and of the Pitborn heritage(+2 Str, +2 Cha is just too nice to pass). I wasn't him to be large, strong, deadly, and intimidating. A no-nonsense, smite-evil destroyer of what is unholy.

For those who play warhammer, think Uber-puritan inquisitor, and for those who really know warhammer, think Karamazov. "a plea of innocence is guilty of wasting my time."

I'd prefer to use a greatsword, but I'm open to other weapon options if they're in keeping with the theme of a holy warrior. I've not looked to close at the feats available to the tiefling in their book, but if any would be beneficial, I'm open to ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah... if you're planning on going Karamazov, sorry, prepare to fall; If that is what you are going for, then know you are really going to be skirting very VERY close to the line of "fallen paladin" because, well, in a phrase; "When it comes down to a choice between law and good, the proper paladin will choose good" Karamazov is... well in a word inflexible, so you might want to temper that with a bit of mercy.

But as for holy warrior weapons; a two handed sword will let you dish out alot of damage, but assuming you're using the Golarion setting, the foremost Paladin goddess, Iomedae, usually prefers the longsword, seeing as it his her holy weapon, and there can be certain feats and benefits derived from such, like Iomedaean Sword-Oath.

I would personally advise that you use the alternative racial traits (Soul Seer would be a very paladin appropriate replacement for Fiendish Sorcery and Shatter as a spell-like ability) also appropriate would be Fiendish Sprinter, in place of Skilled, or Prehensile Tail.

Ancestral Scorn, Fiend Sight and Wicked Valor would also benefit you, as far as feats go.

If you need more text info, the PFSRD will have everything you need, just look it up on google.

Well, regarding Karamazov, I wasn't necessarily meaning my character would be as inflexible as he. I was moreso referring to his puritan "hardline" code of conduct and whatnot. I want him to be strict, but not the "paladin douchebag" role of the party.

Iomadae was my first choice, but I'd prefer to sick to the greatsword. What book is the swordoath in? I couldn't find it anywhere.

The Falchion (and especially the No-Dachi if your game uses Eastern Weapons) are both martial weapons that ultimately deal more DPR than the Greatsword, but it's not such a significant difference that you can't function with a Greatsword just fine if you prefer it.

I'm currently playing a Tiefling Paladin, actually, but I'm an archer (and obviously the Dex/Cha bloodline). I love the prehensile tail, but I have to switch weapons and other gear sometimes, so I can see it being less helpful to you. I also, luckily, got Devil's Sight from that chart instead of my stupid SLA, so it worked out great.

As for Tiefling feats (since I assume you know the Two-Handed Weapon feats already), I definitely recommend Armor of the Pit. +2 AC for a feat? Seems like one of the better racial feats in general, if you ask me.

For story reasons, my paladin worships Sarenrae and has a Scimitar back up. Using a Falchion (as, essentially, a big Scimitar), might fit well if you went with her instead.

I actually hadn't considered Saranrae at all. I might have to look into her faith. Any suggestions on feats/prestige classes that would be fitting for a paladin of her faith?

I'm keeping my options open so any suggestions are welcome.

Well a paladin using two handed means you are going to depend on HP/Heals rather then Ac. A Meat tank rather then a Ac tank if you will.

But Paladins are great at this. Taking the Tiefling alternate favored class ability along with Fey Foundling feat at lvl one will give you some hardcore staying power.

As for weapon I personally would go Fauchard. But that is because I love reach. I find having reach plus the lunge feat can be very helpful for a heavy armored class without any sort of pounce.

Another great feat is unsanctioned knowledge. Depending on your group it might even by the best paladin feat. Take some of the awesome bard buffs. Now if you have a bard its value is a bit less of course.

Also another suggestion is unless your group is very short of heals you should consider oath of vengeance as channel energy really does not scale that well. But if healing is slim then ignore this.

A quick note on spells. If you have not looked at it close yet Hero's Defiance is pretty much the best first lvl spell in the game. Always have one prepped and a lay on hands left and you have a get out of death free card. Also forceful strike is a spell I feel is under valued. It can be great to get out a extra bit of unexpected flash damage.

Also a bit on traits. Dangerously curious can get you UMD as a class skill. Its a solid option for any class with a fair cha. Though if you have a high UMD class in party already its not worth as much.

I've been thinking the same type of PC as well, however I am doing Pal4/Sum1/DD10.

I have a GM who doesn't mind a little bit of tinkering to fit an idea so...

Treating the word "Dragon" as "Demon" in DD and the shapeshift at later levels to be that of a Demon. Trying to contain and control the monster that is within idea.

He's totally pitch black except for teeth, nails, horns, scales are silver but tarnish to black so they need polishing daily to get that neat Holy Sheen.

The Summoner bit is from him literally coughing up the part of him which is Bad and forming a small eidolion (going for a scouty type)

The DD bit is using the mechanics for a Silver dragon bloodline but the fluffyness is all Demon.

Using falcata and shield and Oath of Vengence for that extra smite.

I'm definitely going to have Oath of Vengeance. I'm probably going to stick to the greatsword unless someone can convince me of Saranrae being a better choice. If its any help, I rolled the oversized limbs attribute, that allows you to use large weapons without penalty.

Maybe a large scimitar? If I go the Saranrae route?

Dark Archive

Really, there's nothing even remotely requiring you to use the favored weapon of your faith. I mean, my Half-orc Redeemer Paladin of Sarenrae carries a scimitar, but it's a backup weapon. He uses his Greataxe (plus the Blade of Mercy trait, and eventually the Enforcer feat) to great effect.

I would suggest not going with Sarenrae, she's all about mercy and such, much more so than other gods. Only creatures that have no chance of redemption (undead, evil outsiders, big T, etc..) should be killed outright. Otherwise you would have to give them chance to redeem themselves all the time, which doesen't sound like you character. Iomadae seems more up your alley.

Dark Archive

Well the redemption thing would be very in keeping with his being a tiefling, I was kinda thinking of going demon/devil/ect hunter with him, no mercy for the outsiders.

not sure how good this would be for you but the sacred servant archetype gets a domain at 4th level, which if you are a paladin of Erastil you can choose the animal domain. this would (eventually) get you an animal companion at your paladin level -6, which with boon companion would be your level - 2.

Would be kind of neat to have a wolf animal companion to help track down and kill evil-doers.

or your gm could just let you have a wolf as your bonded mount if he/she is ok with it.

Dark Archive

Not really looking to have any animal companions for him. To likely to die hunting outsiders. Though the concept is nice, just not what I'm personally looking for.

Torag seems to be the god of choice for inflexability and paladins from what i can remember.

Dark Archive

Question, if anyone knows, does the tiefling's "powerful build" trait (which I luckily rolled) stack with the titan mauler's jotungrip ability, letting you use huge weapons?

Dark Archive

That's probably at your DM's discretion. I would say they probably wouldn't, as that's kinda ridiculously silly.

Dark Archive

The idea of wielding a HUGE earthbreaker just struck me as all kinds of cruel. As an evil-outsider hunter, the idea of a giant hammer to smite the demonic is just awesome to me.
