Flying Mount?

Homebrew and House Rules

By RAW, is there a flying mount a PC could go buy?

I know that ranger/druid can have a flying mount as an animal companion. The Ranger in our Kingmaker game now has a roc, which makes the party Rogue want a flying mount as well.

I see no flying mounts listed on the equipment tables and flying PCs are an annoyance so I'm tempted to say no.

Grand Lodge

There are suggestions for various options in the Bestiary, but it's up to your GM as to whether they are possible or feasible. Note that many possible flying mounts are sentient beings in their own right, and forcibly training one, is seen by some as slavery.

Ultimate equipment has some prices for different flying beasts/animals, such as roc, griffon, and hippogriff (their bestiary entries also list their prices).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A cross eyed Pegasus would need a rider to steer him or her to fly straight. I would like to point out similarities between basic training and animal training. With speak with animals, you could find out that many magical beasts would rather be a trained mount than trying to survive in the wilderness.
You could choose to ignore animal companion rules till the hit dice and intelligence catch up with the creature.

Well. Enabling the rogue to buy a full fletched class feature for a bit of gold doesn't sound like a good idea. And letting him buy just a 2hd basic version which does not level up means the special mount might die as easily as pack horses.

Instead, take the leadership feat, drop the followers and take the magical beast mount as your cohort.

Yeah, for intelligent creatures, the Cohort feature would be necessary. Any character can have ranks in Handle Animal and ride a normal horse, but a Pegasus... he has to want to help you.

I don't think a 22 hit point hippogriff for 5000gp is much of a problem. If it becomes a problem, it's one fireball to eliminate it.

How ironclad is it that a rogue cannot share evasion with a cohort?
Before you answer, remember, this is the homebrew section.
