couple druid questions

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

question I have is when I wild shape..it seems (and Im happy about it) that my ape animal compainion is actually better then I am due to the base stats table that they use to level up. Am I missing something here?

I'm level 6 with an ape
when I wild shape I just get the base stats correct? I think I'd go polar bear just to get close to what my companion has. (we have no real tank so hes filling in unfortuately)

Can you read a scroll when using Natural Spell

it states:
You can also use any material components or focuses you possess, even if such items are melded within your current form. This feat does not permit the use of magic items while you are in a form that could not ordinarily use them, and you do not gain the ability to speak while using wild shape.

and you keep all your mental stats...So you could cast off a scroll as well? or no?

Well currently your wild shape is Beast Shape II, and I'm assuming that you're turning into a medium ape, so you'd get a +2 bonus on your strength (yours not the base animal strength) and a +2 natural armor bonus. Other than that, your physical stats don't change.

As for the scroll use while wild shapes, I'd say no, as you can't talk and scrolls are dependent on spoken words. So unless the spell on the scroll has been written as a silent version of the spell, you'd not get to do it. BUT that's just my DM call on it, your mileage may vary depending on your DM.

Back in 3.5 my druid wildshaped was much more powerful than my AC. Since converting to Pathfinder she is not nearly as powerful. This is in part because my AC is slightly more powerful but mostly due to her being seriously gimped because her physical stats are average.

That's a feature of PF, not a bug.

if thats how wild shape works that seems like its pretty horrible compared to 3.5. Not many druids will have a high strength. so you'll end up with maybe a 14 after you transform? Seems like the nerfed the hell out of that ability. Makes it almost worthless. Then large you'd have an 16...not horrible...but compared to most large creatures pretty weak and your companion gets a +8 when upgrading to a large creature. I put a 12 on strength because from what I understood..and maybe thats just they way it was before.. you took on the physical tributes of the animal you changed into. Just bumping up by 2 each time doesnt make sense to me.

wow thats truly horrible.

Welcome to PF. Druids are no longer the most ridiculously overpowered class in the game.

They are merely awesome.

I know, that sucks to some people.

I'm fine with it, myself.

Let me just stop you there. Most Druids that intend to Wild Shape and fight do have high strength. In fact, Strength has been the highest stat on every Druid I've seen in play.

Heh, my level 9 druid has a str of 10. She does fine as an archer druid and battlefield controller. She wildshapes on occasion but mostly to perform specific activities that nobody else can accomplish.

Even with a str of 10 when she wildshapes into a pouncing tiger she's a force to be reckoned with. After all, she's quite capable of casting bull's strength on herself to boost damage.

Back in 3.5 my druid was so overpowered that she absolutely dominated the rest of the party, to the point that I had to downplay her to avoid stealing the spotlight all the time.

Now she's just very, very good and the party barbarian sometimes out damages her, the party sorcerer sometimes outblasts her, the party cleric sometimes outbuffs her and the party rogue sometimes outsneaks her... but she's pretty good at all of those things and is by far the best battlefield controller in the party to boot. Plus she's pretty dang good with a bow...

I mean what the heck else are you looking for?

I love druids with 16str/ 14 wis/ con/dex/int/cha builds... By the time you're wildshaping effectively, and get wild speech (for talking/casting) youll probably have a belt of wis..

Also, you're almost to the spot where the four-attack dinosaur is amazing for damage- use summon natures ally for tanking.

(unless you boost your ape's int, give it weapon prof, heavy armor proficiency and twf for dual scimitars.. Then its awesome.

Yeah, your problem is you've built your character like a 3.5 druid, when the revised wildshape mechanic was deliberately designed to require strength. This way, druids have to choose whether to focus on wisdom, strength or a balance of the two.
