Throwing Rocks

How do you figure how much damage a regular thrown rock does?
I have 'Thrown Anything' so I can throw a fist sized rock without much trouble... but I'm not sure how much damage it would do under PFS rules.
Can someone point me at the actual rules for it? I assume they are improvised weapons...

Oh yes.. and I'm a Dwarf, therefore medium sized.

I ask about the PFS rules because they are somewhat more specific than regular PF RPG rules.

Does it do sling damage with a shorter range?
I know I can throw a baseball pretty far and pretty hard... rocks are a bit harder... at range the damage probably drops off a bit.

This is not the right section. It should be moved to the Rules Forum.

Given that.

The answer is that the GM looks at the improvised weapon in question, and tries to compare it to an item that is roughly the same size or build of an item that already exists.

A thrown rock that fits in your hand, about the size of a fist? It probably does about the same damage as a Dagger, which does 1d4 damage. So I'd say the rock does 1d4 damage. Maybe 1d3 if the rock is small or you don't think the rock should do that much, or maybe 1d6 if it's kinda big or maybe it's a really sharp rock or something.

Improvised Weapons are a classic example of expected table variance in Pathfinder, and no one can tell you the definitive right answer, other than giving you a sort of ballpark estimation. However, I'll tell you right now I think a thrown rock that fits in your hand does 1d4 damage.

There is no rules forum for the PFS... this is a question about PFS rules. PFS rules are supposed to be specific and consistent.

There are no official rules for this? I mean seriously? What is more common than throwing a rock? I know I got in trouble for it when I was 5... didn't everyone?

Check the Oracle mystery Stone. There is a revelation Rock Throwing. There is says that the thrown rock deals 2d4 for a medium creature. But, it also says that the oracle is an expert at it. Maybe a non-expert deals half that.

That still isn't official PFS rules... can anyone post a link to the official rules for this? Particularly as they relate to PATHFINDER SOCIETY ORGANIZED PLAY?
(of course some joker has now moved this thread OUT of PFS discussion so it is now blasting into areas where people don't care about the specifics of PFS play... how annoying for everyone)

You are asking a question for which there is no "official" answer. There is no link to provide, formula calculate or whatever to determine how much damage a thrown rock does. Yes throwing a rock is common but that doesn't change the fact that there are no specific rules for it.

If you're worried about it being for PFS, then simply ask the GM what die to roll. The GM in PFS still gets to make decisions, correct?

A rock is clearly an improvised weapon. So the rules on those are what you are looking for.

Improvised Weapons

Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses an improvised weapon in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

So a thrown rock has a range of 10ft, has a threat range of 20 and a crit multiplier of 2. The only thing not clearly written is the damage.

A sling, when using a rock instead of a bulled deals damage one step smaller. For a medium sling that's 1d3. A shuriken deals 1d2 that's the two things nearest in size so they are your comparison.
The rest is up to your gm. But 1d2 or 1d3 will not make such a big difference for table variety.

TL;DR
Rock 0gp 1d2 (or 1d3) x2 10ft b improvised

Normally the two damage codes for weapons are for small and medium weapons. This time it's both medium but the gm has to decide which to use.
