so im helping a friend make a fighter, he hasn't played pathfinder before and im still new to this, only 11 Sundays of game play
was showing him the ability score modifiers and he asked the question
" since a fighter is 2+ int mod, if he was at 7 int, would he be at -2 ranks per level?"
or even -1 and he would only be getting 1 rank per level instead of the base 2?
hes not going to have his int that low, the 7 mark, but would that happen or do you stay above 0 or the base 2 and you dont go down below that?

No matter how low your intelligence, you will always receive at least 1 skill point per level. Note that the bonus human skill point and favored class skill point are on top of that - a human character will receive a minimum of 2 skill points per level.
You apply your character's Intelligence modifier to:
The number of bonus languages your character knows at the start of the game. These are in addition to any starting racial languages and Common. If you have a penalty, you can still read and speak your racial languages unless your Intelligence is lower than 3.
The number of skill points gained each level, though your character always gets at least 1 skill point per level.
Appraise, Craft, Knowledge, Linguistics, and Spellcraft checks.

You always get at least 1 skill point per level: Link.
I interpret the rules to say that Intelligence only modifies the number of base skill points for the class level. If that result is less than 0, the character gets 1 skill point. Then, he may add other skill point bonuses from benefits like being human or taking a level in a favored class.
