To be clear I mean R2 as a fantasy creature, not sic-fi creature, though blending of those elements would be fine.
I think we can build R2D2 in a few ways.
1) Intelligent Artifact item.
2) Outsider Either Eidolon style or something from Mechanus
3) something I haven't thought of.

Start with a small animated object and add the robot subtype and levels of rogue.
Seconding either Redchigh or Lordzack. Just a Small-sized sentient construct with Rogue levels, decent UMD and Disable Device scores, and a lot of hidden compartments with wands and weapons inside.

This is best.
Remember that R2D2 is awesomely skilled when you think about it. He is one of 4 characters that was in all the movies (the others being vader/anakin, obiwan and yoda: C3P0 doesn't count due to mind wipes) and in the expanded universe he was still around in the legacy era (about a century later or so.
Also think about it
- As a character he has been around for a long time (18 to 20 years or so by New Hope). And he has done a lot ie lots of XP
- There has been very little he cannot hack (or slice to star wars palance)
- He successfully hacked one of the Empires most secure facilities (the death star) quickly and without triggering alarms.
- He avoids/can take alot of hits and still keep functioning
In pathfinder you could give a good case for him to be 20th level or even epic. As for class rogue would be best, or expert. As for race yes he is a construct (small). I would invent a subtype called droid.
Don't even think about yodas stats (900 years you get, many levels I have gained)
