D&D Insider Style Pathfinder Character Creator

Liberty's Edge

Hi all,

I am looking to create a fully functional character creator along the same lines as D&D Insider's, in that it will calculate all pre requisitites for you and have lightbox links to the d20pfsrd.com page for that specific item.

I am wondering if something like this is legitimate or not. I don't want to get too far in only to find out that it's against something in the OGL, or against Pathfinder's policies and so forth.

I do know that using the term Pathfinder is a no no, but I see all of the other character creator's / sheets / excel sheets doing the same, and I'm not charging a fee to use it or anything, just site ad revenue.

I started development on it today and plan on putting at least a couple of hours a day in till it's done. Once I get the basic foundation code set up it's mainly database population, as the majority of the content are feats and spells. It is a lot of work but I expect to have it done within the next 3-4 months. putting in 10-15 hours a week most weeks.

So looking for feedback on viability, interest levels, functionality suggestions, and really just whether this project has any major chance of getting squashed by paizo or wizards of the coast.

Thanks all,

Gicker

I suppose the url would help: http://pathfinder.gicker.ca/

You might want to check out Hero Lab. It basically does what you describe, though it is a tad pricey. With no expansions I believe its $30.

That said, I'd use something equivalent for free in a heartbeat, so, good on ya!

Why not just assist another similar project like PCGen rather than reinvent the wheel?

Ooh, I totally didn't know PCGen supported Pathfinder!

I didn't know PCGen supported Pathfinder either. That said I'd rather do my own project, as I'd like to to be web based and able to earn some ad revenue.

I take it the project is legitimate then.

Also I know about Hero Lab, I have used it extensively, but it gets very pricey with all the games I play and especially with all of the Pathfinder content released. It's like having to buy the books twice, and I can't justify that.

Besides, I have a lot of time on my hands right now, and work is coming in very slowly, so I want to do something productive that I can call my own. Nothing wrong with that is there?

Thanks for the responses though, I know they were well meaning, but I am determined to do this, as long as 'this' is legal (insomuch that it won't get shut down) according to OGL and Pathfinder terms.

Thanks again all,

Cheers,

Gicker

Also PCGen is a download. Mine is web based. There's benefits to both, and I can see some people who would prefer to have a download with everything kept local on their machine, and I can also see some people who would prefer to use a web interface, as long as it was user-friendly and fast enough.

My specific interest is providing for play by post games, where a web based interface would be useful, especially if it can output a character sheet that they can link/embed in their forum, and edit without having to recreate a character sheet.

I'm a bit of a play by post aficionado. I run my own site, have programmed my own persistant map software with custom image placement, drag and drop, and map tile arrangement which is always online, and now I want to do this, as my core group is getting a little fed up with D&D 4e and D&D Next, and are intending to switch over to Pathfinder. We just need the tools to make it easy on us. So Phase 1 is me coding this character creator, and phase 2, if I have the time when phase 1 is done, is to create the equivalent to D&D Insider's adventure tools, mainly just a monster database/editor that makes encounter building easy.

But now I'm glancing a bit too far in the future. I think many will be pleased with the final product once I'm done, and it's coming along fairly quickly so far.

Cheers all,

Moved thread. You should really contact Vic Wertz regarding using the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game in software, as it's a legal grey area.
