Basically, what are the odds of a person in Korvosa deciding to dedicate themselves to Ragathiel? I've got this idea for a character who was one of Gaedren's Little Lamms, and became a kind of hedge knight, seeking vengeance on his "foster father," and basically crusading for chivalry and justice in Korvosa, but having a lot of trouble keeping his fierce temper in check.

But where would such a fellow even HEAR of Ragathiel? I know there are cults to him in Magnimar, but that would be a strong reason NOT for him to follow the Empyreal Lord, as anti-Magnimar prejudice is strong in the city, and the character could then probably be viewed as a traitor to his hometown. Also, given the strong Asmodean presence, faith in the "fallen" son of an archdevil would likely be frowned upon.

Granted, once Chronicles of the Righteous comes out, a lot more will probably be explained, but still, is this a viable character choice for a Korvosan? Or should I stick with more established, tried and true gods, like Sarenrae or Iomedae?

I dont recall exactly, but one of the traits you can take is a trait where you find a holy symbol and learn about/ start following the faith. Gaedren finds it, destroys it and beats you with in an inch of your life, leaving you for dead.

If you were a little lamb, you would likely be a pick pocket and scavenger, there are a lot of travelers and visitors to korvosa, I don't see why you couldnt have come across a holy symbol like this, and/or even have been talking to someone who was a follower of this faith who was visiting korvosa, like an adventurer?

That's actually the trait I was going for. What I was wondering was about education. Finding a dedicated Ragathiel worshiper to learn from for a few years should be hard in Korvosa, shouldn't it? As those that do so could be considered Magnimar sympathizers or spies?

Well, for example, how did Moses learn about HIS religion? How did he learn about God?

A) a burning bush
B) he married the high priests daughter.

Perhaps your character could have visions? I mean we are talking about a fantasy game with a "god" involved here.

think of "real world" religious claims. How far fetched do you really need to get in a fantasy setting? I think visions is enough.

But if you don't like that, maybe a mysterious stranger in your characters past?

Lamm beats the heck out of you, leaves you for dead, Starved and Broken, the cloaked stranger brings you to an Inn, pays for your meals and time at the Inn to bring you back to health. (the story of the good samaritan from the bible) You asked the inn keeper you your mysterious benefactor was but he did not know.

Through out your youth, the mysterious cloaked stranger has returned several times, to help you out, giving you advice and guidance, and often tutoring you in the faith of Ragathiel.

Who is this cloaked figure? A cleric starting up a new religion in the streets? A wandering adventurer? Ragathiel himself? Who knows?

Silver Crusade

While the Magnimar/Korvosa divide probably shouldn't be taken as an absolute between the various relgions represented in both, many of the Empyreal Lords potentially could catch some cultural pushback. One organic way of getting around that is to have the various Empyreals and their worship or reverence nested within the larger faiths of the gods that have established followings in town. The typical Korvosan might view the mystery cults of Magnimar as inappropriate while being completely accepting of the Empyreals as lesser figures of devotion beneath their gods. For example, Ragathiel could easily fit into the larger faith of Iomedae.

How much the "parent" faith affects one's understanding of the Empyreal of their choice could vary a lot between individual worshippers alone.

So the PC was one of Lamm's lambs when he was younger. He was finally rescued from the clutches of the creepy old man by a visitor from Magnimar. This visitor was a worshipper of Ragathiel who couldn't disregard the injustice he witnessed and intervened when Lamm was abusing the kid.

He took the kid with him to Magnimar and taught him the ways of the Lord of Chivalry, chastity, duty and vengeance. When the boy reached adulthood, he decided to return to Korvosa to right the wrong that was inflicted upon him when he was a child. after all, vengeance should be his ...

sure that works

Moses I'd peg more as an Oracle than a cleric or inquisitor, which is more where I'm looking.

well I'd say moses was THE cleric.

What class is your character going to be?

Inquisitor.

should be a cool character. Inquisitors could have visions too though. Not like daily or anything, but for the purpose of being called to his profession.

His home town is going to need a lot of chivalry and justice coming up soon.

What are you going to take for a domain? Or are you going after an inquisition?

Well, that sort of depends on the deity choice. If I end up going with Ragathiel, the Rage subdomain is too good to pass up. I'm leaning more towards Sarenrae for ease of character though (Sarenrae actually has a temple in Korvosa and is respected by the populace, plus her church definitely has a place for inquisitors, whereas those would probably be rare in Ragathiel's relatively small cults), and the Illumination or Valor inquisition.

Theres an anger (rage) inquisition too

Which is only available to worshipers of Gorum or Rovagug.
