Unlimited Cantrip Substitutions?

Advice

I play with a low-magic survivalist play-style group and was wondering if there were any good ways to make a substitutions for limiting cantrips and orisons?

And yes, I get it, you may not agree but I'd appreciate some good feedback!

It depends how limited you want them the easiest one i can come up sith would be caster level + casting stat modifier times per day or if thats too many then 1+ 1/x levels + casting stat modifier.

You can use the rules from D&D 3.5

0lvl spells are prepared like any other spells and you have only X spell slots depending on your caster level.

Or remove them completely and bump the ones you want to keep in your world (e.g. detect magic, read magic, light) up one level.

That way the basic things like clean food and water can't be magicked into existence by low-level characters.

Are you worried the "unlimited" nature of Cantrips and Orisons will overpower the PCs in this low-magic game?

If so, how will it accomplish this imbalance?

It sounds like this is more of making magic rare, rather than about balance, blackblood. And though I don't like low magic, I'd suggest using the 3.x # of cantrips per day as Eridan said.

He said he's trying to make a survivalist style game so quite a few cantrips could easily take away the tension of having limited resources and trying to survive, with Create Water and Purify Food and Drink being the big ones. That said, TC, you could just disallow certain cantrips like that.

Simply banning a few "problem" Cantrips and Orisons should do it.

Or bumping those Cantrips/Orisons up a level or two.
