Hello everyone, I am currently running a pathfinder game (D1.5 revenge of the kobold king) and one of the PCs asked about multiclassing into the dragon rider when the group levels. I have a question on this...
When the PC bonds with the dragon, it mentions that the dragon will grow slightly in size. It then mentions that if a red dragon decides to bond it grows large immediately, so is it only a few dragons that can grow to medium or large when bonded and some stay small? In other words, the size description for the dragon is what it is after bonded.
Kind of odd to be a Medium sized dragon rider but can't ride a bras or white dragon until you are level 8 when it grows into a medium creature. maybe the PC should be called Dragon Keeper til it can ride.

i can only think, after reading the PRD of the 3rd party class that there must be a chart or something in the actual book it is printed in to explain what happens, and isnt listed in the prd.
the description in the prd says that it can carry a rider as soon as it becomes the same size as him, which means a medium dragon can carry a medium rider, which goes against the normal rules for mounts which requires them to be at least 1 size category larger that the person they carry.
i can't say much else without seeing the book.

Many dragons start smaller than Small. Those grow to be Small, despite their young age, when bonded to a dragonrider. Bigger dragons (those who are larger at the same age categories) begin their steed careers as Medium, while the largest begin as Large.
This is just like picking cavalier mounts -- if you are playing a human, you shouldn't take a riding dog as your mount. Similarly the Small dragons are designed for smaller races, for whom a mount beginning as Large (or even Medium) might actually be a drawback.
Since dragons are mystic and powerful flyers the dragonrider rules do allow a dragon to carry a rider of the same size (in contravention of the normal riding rules), but if you choose to select a Small dragon as a medium character, yes you're not going to be "riding" it for a while.

The PRD and the book match (as to the size of the dragon at level 1). So a human, orc, elf, or other medium creature who elects a brass or white dragon as a mount, will be out of luck til 8th level :-(
This is exactly like a human cavalier choosing a riding dog. Not all the dragons are designed to be ridden by all races at all levels. That's a design choice.

i'm sorry, i am just not seeing it in the prd where it actually dictates sizes for dragons. where is it?

edit: ah i missed all the stuff at the bottom of the page, i usually stop at archetypes because thats usually the end, my bad.

This is what it states for animal companion, so I guess it means yes. Since the dragon mount is not an animal (per se) I guess it can include those feats associated with monsters.
Animal companions should select their feats from those listed under Animal Feats. Animal companions can select other feats, although they are unable to utilize some feats (such as Martial Weapon Proficiency). Note that animal companions cannot select a feat with a requirement of base attack bonus +1 until they gain their second feat at 3 Hit Dice.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. If an animal companions intelligence is increased to 3 or more it can select feats beyond that normally restricted list.
Animal Feats
Animal companions can select from the following feats: Acrobatic, Agile Maneuvers, Armor Proficiency (light, medium, and heavy), Athletic, Blind-Fight, Combat Reflexes, Diehard, Dodge, Endurance, Great Fortitude, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Initiative, Improved Natural Armor, Improved Natural Attack, Improved Overrun, Intimidating Prowess, Iron Will, Lightning Reflexes, Mobility, Power Attack, Run, Skill Focus, Spring Attack, Stealthy, Toughness, Weapon Finesse, and Weapon Focus. Animal companions with an Intelligence of 3 or higher can select any feat they are physically capable of using. GMs might expand this list to include feats from other sources.
In the case of the bolded text, what does your group do? Do that for dragons.
