For the last 30 years I have been adding up total monster xp values and then dividing it among the amount of players at the table. Does Pathfinder do this a little different? I.E. if there is a CR2 encounter, by definition do all players at the table just get flat CR2 XP awards?
So sorting this, a goblin is 1/3rd of CR 1. 3 Goblins = a CR 1 encounter and 6 goblins equal a CR 2 encounter. The party knocks off 6 goblins and they get each get the equivalent of a CR 2 encounter?

You're doing it right already.
Exact XP: Once the game session is over, take your list of defeated CR numbers and look up the value of each CR on Table: Experience Point Awards under the “Total XP” column. Add up the XP values for each CR and then divide this total by the number of characters—each character earns an amount of XP equal to this number.
Abstract XP: Simply add up the individual XP awards listed for a group of the appropriate size. In this case, the division is done for you—you need only total up all the awards to determine how many XP to award to each PC.

Since my english is not 100% perfect i might miss something here BUT... if the right way to give XP is to give each member the full value of the said CR then it means i have screwed up my party for the last 4 years!
If a group of 4 PC defeats a CR4 each get 1/4 of a CR4 value, in other words 300 xp each!
