Monsters And Weapon Proficiency

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

Characters get weapon proficiency via their class and can get feats to gain proficiency and if they don't have proficiency there is supposed to be a -4 penalty.
There is the same basic idea with armor and shields too.

So what about monsters with no class levels?
The Bestiary Centaur, for example, is using a longsword but I see to proficiency feats but also no penalties in its stat block either.

Monsters gain proficiencies from their type.

The centaur is a Monstrous Humanoid. Creatures of the monstrous humanoid type have the following proficiencies:

PRD wrote:

•Proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.

•Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Monstrous humanoids not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Monstrous humanoids are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.

If it's not mentioned in its entry, then it's not proficient with that weapon.

ahhh, I see.... under the Creature Type traits

Just check the type description. Each type specifically lists what kind of weapons monsters of that type are proficient with.

I'm not going to copy/paste all of the proficiency-entries :)

Edit: I see you found it. Well, I'll just leave the link here anyway ;)
