Can you Stealth while Flying? (Wildshape)

Rules Questions

I know Owls have a stealth skill but I assumed its because they hunt during the night and get concealment plus hiding in trees, ect.

But what about Wildshaped into an Air Elemental (small)? Can you use the Stealth Skill while hovering? Air Elementals do not use wings to FLY.

Can you use the Stealth Skill to hide 20 feet in the air during the day with no concealment or cover or anything substantial to offer a hiding place?

This came up tonight in our Game.

Without a special ability like hips, you need cover or concealment to hide.
For the other parts, I see nothing that indicates you can't stealth while using a form of movement you have access to.

You still need cover or concealment to make a stealth check. Air elementals do not have any kind of innate invisibility or similar ability that would allow them to ignore this restriction on the Stealth skill.

What everyone else said, basically. I'm just concurring.

You can stealth while flying, but you can't stealth without cover or concealment without HiPS or another ability that functions similarly. An owl can stealth while flying because it is a nocturnal hunter. Outside at night with a moon in the sky counts as dim light, and creatures can make stealth checks to conceal themselves. Since animals generally only get low-light vision, the owl can use stealth as it glides silently in to swoop up its prey.

The actual mechanical benefits of the elemental forms Wildshape grants are spelled out in the associated spell descriptions for the associated elemental body spell series. If they weren't, I'd suggest once the druid can become a medium elemental that s/he consider the Invisible Stalker, which has the air and elemental subtypes and has Natural Invisibility (Ex). By my reading of elemental body II, it seems like it's limited to just the basic elementals though.

yes, i also concur with the above posts. you need something that grants concealment/cover. look into buying a lesser cloak of displacement, lets you hide anywhere.

Are clouds not cover enough?

if clouds are 20 feet in the air, sure. but i doubt that was the case in the situation the OP stated.

Owls also have specially designed feathers so that they're silent fliers. I have no idea how noisy an air elemental would be though.

Depending on where you are you could duck into the nearest tree, open window or ask someone in your party to always carry a really large kite to provide you with cover.

Fly through the leaves.

Don't know how many times I read that thinking "Hips are a special ability?...what?!" =D

Don't you know? Is this video Hips (Ex) or Hips (Su)?

I'm leaning toward that demonstration being categorized as Hips (Su). That's a supernatural ability right there. I think it's a mind-affecting fascination effect.

;-) Shadowdancer theme song.

I know I prefer hips without cover or concealment.

I noticed that after I posted, but it was too late to edit. :(

If you have cover, concealment, or invisibility you can use Stealth. It doesn't matter if you are standing on the ground or flying. Also if you have HiPS, and qualify to use it, you could use Stealth regardless of whether you are on the ground or in the air.
